Church of Advent continues to host a food pantry and cafe for those hungry and lonely through its Open Door program every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

According to the church’s website, Open Door’s Just Food Project is the church’s response to the food scarcity in Walnut Hills. As further explained, they offer fresh produce, meat, dairy, canned goods, and pantry staples.

In Just Food Project, the church members provide hot coffee, as posted on its website. They also spend time having conversations with these vulnerable individuals.

The website stressed that holding a food pantry is not the only program they have to deal with “systemic injustice.”

Beginning of Open Door

The website revealed that Church of Advent member Libby Higgins pioneered Open Door in 1973. They noted that Higgins spent time sitting and waiting for neighbors to come while the door was open wide.

In addition, the church said that neighbors were coming and sharing their stories, such as their joys and sorrows. Higgins and other parishioners slowly created programs to deal with the needs of the people in their community, as the website stated.

The website stressed that members of the Church of the Advent were motivated to love their neighbors. They said that they are making these efforts because of Jesus, the website stressed.

Besides, Open Door works with others to help stop hunger and loneliness. They mentioned that they believe that every individual has dignity. Their programs seek to strengthen them with their services.

More importantly, the website stressed that Open Door offers food security. They also make ways to create relationships and community.

Working with Other Organizations

The Open Door program proudly mentioned those organizations they are working with to achieve its goal. One of them is the Walnut Hills Redevelopment Foundation.

According to the foundation’s website, they are a non-profit corporation for community development. They noted that they are serving to improve the life of people in Walnut Hills.

The website further explained that the community council founded this organization in 1977. They desired to provide affordable shelters when people were leaving Walnut Hills and, in some cases, being forgotten.

The foundation stressed that they want to lead a continuous and positive transformation.

Desiring Quality Place

The same website emphasized that the foundation seeks to witness Walnut Hills filled with life in a safe environment. As further explained, they wanted to let every individual feel that they belong at Walnut Hills.

The Walnut Hills Redevelopment Foundation believes having a “quality place” should be available for everyone.

Moreover, the website noted that the foundation heard about its community in the last four years. So their new brand identity came from the concerns of their neighborhood, as posted on the website.

They added that it shows their never-ending desire for “equitable” transformation and growth. The foundation also said its new brand identity combines past strategies and modern approaches.

The website emphasized that it is a unique brand that honors and celebrates the history and identity of Walnut Hills.
