Prestoncrest Church of Christ concluded Teach Us to Pray seminars on November 28. These seminars which, were held Sunday mornings through November, were designed to help people develop an intimate relationship with God through prayer.

Members and non-members of the church benefitted from the relevant topics presented by the pastor of this large congregation, Gordon Dabbs Ph.D.

In this series, Dr. Dabbs talks about the essential elements of “The Lord’s Prayer” taught by Jesus to His disciples.

He asks, “Does prayer life seem to be a struggle sometimes? Do prayers make a difference? While some see prayer as more of a duty than a delight, Jesus saw it as essential. He hungered to spend time with God in prayer because He understood only then could He experience the Father’s peace, power, and provision in every season of life.”

Twofold Mission

Dr. Dabbs emphasized that a Christian’s prayer life reflects his intimacy with God, and this is the reason why Prestoncrest Church of Christ endeavors to help its members improve their walk with the Lord through prayer.

This endeavor is rooted in the church’s twofold mission: Passion for God and Compassion for People.

Based on Matthew 22:35-40, where Jesus said the greatest commandments are to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind… [and to] love your neighbor as yourself,” Prestoncrest believes this twofold mission of theirs is the essence of what Jesus said is the greatest commandment.

To fulfill this mission, members of the church are encouraged to use their “talents, abilities, time and resources to do three things: Reach Up, Reach In, and Reach Out.

Teach Us to Pray

This series of seminars challenged the attendees to, in the words of the Apostle Paul, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) in order to find “peace, power, and provision for every season of life!”

During this pandemic, it is important for people to know how to connect with God. The crisis has affected many, and prayer helps one to deal with life’s difficulties.

Participants attended the onsite seminars, as well as online, which were live-streamed via YoutTube or Podcast.

Not a Stranger to Prayer

Prestoncrest is not a stranger to prayer.  Its long history is a testimony to how God faithfully answers the prayer of His people.

The church began in 1966 as a dream. On their website, Prestoncrest presented a brief history of their organization:

“The dream to plant the Prestoncrest congregation originated in 1966 at Skillman Avenue. A steering committee composed of members of the Skillman Avenue, Preston Road, Waterview, Walnut Hill, and Lake Highlands congregations worked together to implement the vision of planting a new congregation in North Dallas.”

The Lord answered the prayers of His people and their first congregational worship in January 1972, attended by just a handful of believers, grew through the years. The current number of members, according to their website, is now over 1300.
