Pete Tung, a music enthusiast who ministers in the church and performs in a secular band, considers building worship teams his passion. He aims to provide opportunities for people to connect with God through music, prayer, and God’s word.

His Background in Music

According to Midland Reporter-Telegram, the 42-year-old Baltimorean completed a degree in classical guitar at York College of Pennsylvania. Both Christian and non-Christian songs have influenced his love for music.

He loves Hillsong United, Elevation, Bethel, Chris Tomlin, and Shane and Shane for worship music. He is also influenced by Eric Clapton and John Mayer for guitar, as well as Boy II Men, Jay-Z, Michael Jackson, and Laureen Hill. His musical guilty pleasure is “All I Do Is Win” by DJ Khaled, which he considers his “Walk Up” song, as mentioned in the article.

As a Church Music Minister

When asked how much of a calling was the position for him, Tung traced back his involvement in the church to his younger years. He was 18 when he started helping out a church youth group in Baltimore with only four chords in mind.

With the little he knew back then, he slowly learned everything he needed to know to worship. He even learned how to use a capo to play the same chord shapes but in a different key.

During college, Tung joined the InterVaristy Christian Fellowship. The campus ministry was looking for a replacement for its graduating senior worship leader. He started helping out, and by the following year, he started leading worship every Thursday night for the fellowship, as stated in the same source.

After his graduation, Tung knew what he wanted for himself. He wanted to lead worship full time, but he had to support his wife too. Before being hired as a Youth and Young Adult Worship Leader at a York church, he tried working different jobs. He fulfilled his desire to become a full-time minister.

Another opportunity came up for Tung at Fannin Terrace Baptist Church in Midland. The worship minister position was looking for the right person. He and his wife Jessi decided to move and serve at the Family of Fannin.

In line with Tung’s passion, the mission of the said church is to transform people through the gospel and become more like Christ. Tung is in his spiritual element every Sunday at Fannin.

According to Fannin’s current music minister, music has been his calling and God’s gift for him. He had known it since college, but he didn’t know how to do it before.

As a Band Bassist

Croakin’ Toads is a fun cover band where Tung plays the bassist. Together with Trey Walker, the drummer from Fannin’s, and Zack Neves, they keep the band multiracial, as mentioned on MRT.

According to the band’s official website, they play music from the 1960s to the present from different eras. This includes songs from Eagles, Maroon 5, Bon Jovi, Jimi Hendrix, Bruno Mars, Backstreet Boys, and many more.

Tung feels blessed and humbled to be working with such high-caliber musicians. All of them can lead songs vocally, on top of playing them with their respective instruments.
