Friendship United Methodist Church in Porter, TX, recently went viral again over its 'creative' Astros post-season signs.

Astros' Church Lady'

Called by many as church lady or sign lady, Kelli Merritt from the local Porter church recently shared the story behind her 'creative' signs.

As first reported via ABC 13, the Houston Astros post-season ended its game on Nov. 3. Despite getting a 0-7 score against Atlanta Braves, Merritt made the game more interesting, especially for fans.

On the announcement signage of Friendship church, the church lady reportedly runs once a week to create messages for the team and fans.

Such messages include funny lines like "Love thy neighbor even if they're a Boston fan" or "I bet I can get Astros baseball to fit into the Ten Commandments theory. Everybody said, 'I don't think so.' I proved them wrong."

As said in the report, Merritt's creative signages caught the attention of a lot of Astros fans.

She shared in the interview that the job of placing letters on the bulletin was not difficult. But, for her, it could be time-consuming.

Merritt also said that letter spacing is one thing she focuses more on in her job. She makes sure all passersby would understand her phrases.

But, of course, not all people were happy with using the Bible to support the team. Merritt shared that there was a time when a woman approached her due to her 'rude' message.

She replied with:" 'You must be a Boston fan. It's OK.

So far, other Astros fans or even the Astros team have no violent comments about the church's fun initiative.

Not First One

Surprisingly, Merritt was not the first one who initiated the said Astros signs at Friendship church.

In a separate report from ABC 13 in 2019, Chastity Beyer also had the same routine. Before Merritt, Beyer was the first one from Friendship church to create such a movement.

At the time, she said in her interview that she believed God called her to do that job. She noted that she wanted to inspire people during or after the game.

Beyer remembered a time when she placed signage saying, 'Honk if you love Jesus.' Back then, the Friendship church member noted how vehicles continuously honk whenever they see the sign.

In the same year, Click2Houston also had a similar story about religious support for the Astros team. Instead of signages, a woman from the Our Lady's Productions sold rosaries back then.

Elsie Hernandez reportedly created Holy Rosary beads with the Astros team color as its theme. At the time, the Astros team was playing against the Washington Nationals, based on a Baseball Reference website.

It was the last time that the Astros team succeeded in joining the World Series. Unfortunately, they lose against Nationals with a score of 4-3.

Astros Cheated?

Although the Astros lost in the game, there were still issues in that World Series. In 2020, CNBC released a report citing Washington Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki.

Suzuki claimed that the Astros team cheated over its "sign-stealing scheme." It was reported that during the 2017 and 2018 playoffs, the Astros was revealed using the same scheme.
