Church’s History

A group of missionaries from California was dispatched to the sleepy hamlet of Phoenix with the aim of founding a Methodist Episcopal Church, according to the First United Methodist Church of Phoenix.

The church said the neighborhood's brush arbor served as a communal gathering place and hosted the first religious services in 1881.

It added that as its first structure, they quickly constructed a 20 by 40-foot one-room meeting house out of adobe.

First United Methodist Church of Phoenix continued to overrun its buildings over the course of the following more than 70 years, and in the 1950s it constructed the current sanctuary, an outstanding example of mid-century church architecture that is rife with symbolism and history.

According to the church's website, First United Methodist Church of Phoenix celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2006 and 2007.

After spending many years in other parts of the city, the windows from the former downtown church were moved back to First Church in 2008 and 2009, the church said.

The church expressed its appreciation for the preservation of this historical feature in the current place of worship.
