Job Context
Grounded in our purpose and priorities, the home area of Christian Community and Leadership (CCL) helps the ELCA reach and engage new, younger, and more diverse people, welcoming them into the Christian faith. To this end, we will energize and engage our core membership and work with the whole of the ELCA to recruit, develop and deploy the leadership, both lay and rostered, that the church needs to fulfill its purpose of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ and building the church.
This is a full-time, deployed position based in the Atlanta, GA area and near the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) Campus.
Job Purpose
The position will:
Create a national leadership center for a new, younger, and more diverse church.
Lead and recruit participants for non-degree and degree programs in theological education and spiritual growth among rostered leaders, candidates for rostered ministry, and lay leaders with an intentional focus on African Descent pedagogies and in the development of African Descent leaders and communities.
Equip all leaders for the gospel-centered work of doing justice and dismantling racism and systemic oppression; and
Deepen relationships with Historically Black communities of faith, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Southeastern Synod of the ELCA.
Job Responsibilities
1. Program Development and Coordination
Plans, develops and from time-to-time teach workshops, classes, day-to-day activities; gathers and trains resource people, volunteers, and faculty to facilitate educational activities and processes.
Envisions and develops curriculum and programmatic initiatives for Congregational Vitality, Rostered and Lay Leadership Development, and Community Development.
2. Networking and Relationship-Building
Creates relationships and space for the equipping of leaders to engage in the work doing justice, dismantling racism, and ending systemic oppression through the practice of public, justice-centered theology.
Makes and maintains relationships with the three expressions of the ELCA, when appropriate. Engages with the larger community in building an impactful public praxis.
Maintains connections with seminaries, including the Interdenominational Theological Center and other schools, their Deans, Presidents and Faculty to initiate and sustain partnerships for TEEM training.
3. Resource Development and Stewardship
Shares responsibility with stakeholders for fundraising, including but not limited to writing grant proposals and seeking operational funds.
Plans budgets, follows budgets for all activities including travel, scholarships, office expenses and supplies, salaries as appropriate.
Travel
As needed. A valid driver’s license is required.
Physical Effort
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will be required to drive an automobile.
Required Experience:
Required Skills
3 to 5 years of experience directing programs, leading teams, and the ability to work in partnership with others in academic, ecclesiastical, and community environments.
Master’s Degree required. Master of Divinity preferred.
Extensive knowledge/understanding and appreciation for ELCA theology, polity, structure (3 expression of the church, operations, leadership) and process (Candidacy process).
Skill in community development and organizing.
Knowledge of organizational development and behavior.
Considerable experience with Africentric pedagogy.
Capacity in managing organizations through change.
Required certifications or licenses
Management certificates or other related community or leadership development education or training.
