North Avenue has a dynamic music ministry. The Director of Worship Arts & Choral Music is responsible for overseeing and developing a ministry that engages the congregation in traditional expressions of worship that express praise and glory to God, and working collaboratively with the worship arts department, preachers, and other leaders to ensure a cohesive congregant experience across all services.

Supervisor: Senior Pastor/Head of Staff

Supervises: Cherub Choir Director (PT), Staff Singers (PT), and any guest musicians

Hours: Sunday mornings and evenings, Wednesday evenings, and flexible weekday office hours. Fridays and Saturdays are ordinarily scheduled days off.

Essential Responsibilities:

· Oversee and direct the adult Chancel Choir in weekly rehearsals and worship

· Direct the Junior Choir(1st-5th grade) in weekly rehearsals to introduce them to age-appropriate music and opportunities to lead in worship

· Serve asprimary organist or pianist, as a soloist and accompanist for traditional worship

· Provide musical oversightfor traditional worship services

· Collaborate with the staff on weekly and year-round worship planning

· Lead in the selection of anthems, hymns, songs, and other musical pieces that are in thematic support of worship services and special events; this includes procuring choirs, soloists, and guest musicians as needed

· Serve as musician as requested for weddings and memorial services and assist the families as the key contact in determining the appropriate music to be used

· Identify and address areas in worship where there is opportunity for growth looking to increase the overall numbers of volunteers involved in worship ministries

· Oversee the care of the music library and all musical instruments and equipment

· Maintain an updated list of staff singers, backup organists, and specialized contract musicians

· Lead and be responsible for additional ministry opportunities as needed

Other Responsibilities:

· Attend weekly staff and ministry meetings

· Co-lead Worship Team with assigned elder and Director of Contemporary Worship

· Assist with the management of the Communion/Altar Guild

· Prepare liturgies for traditional service

· Look for opportunities to grow and diversify the worship expression of the church

· Actively manage budget in conjunction with Director of Contemporary Worship & Innovative Technologies as well as the Worship Team

· Foster community in the ministry of music and seek to support the church’s mission

· Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills:

· Confessing Christian and active participant in the Christian life and worship of the church; possess a theologically-grounded understanding of Christian worship and the role of music in that worship

· Bachelor’s degree required, concentration in music or related field preferred

· Possess 5 years of choral directing experience, preferably in a congregational setting

· Interest in and ability to plan and lead a variety of musical genres (e.g., traditional hymnody, classical, jazz, contemporary, multi-cultural)

· Mastery of organ and piano

· Possess good interpersonal skills, ability to work with a team, and the ability to motivate and inspire

· Strong organizational and computer skills
