Global Ministries connects The United Methodist Church, its people and congregations to partner with others engaged in God’s global work, which takes place in a variety of settings, countries and cultures. Global Ministries works through missionaries and partners in more than 60 countries around the world. Some of our key programs are in the areas of Disaster Response through United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), Global Health, Hunger & Poverty, Water & Sanitation, Education, Migration, Racial & Ethnic Ministries, Creation Care and Mission, Evangelism & Church Growth.

Summary of Responsibilities

The Executive Director for Missional Engagement is a senior leader who works with the General Secretary in developing a strategy to broaden Global Ministries’ missional engagement within the UMC connection, Pan Methodist, ecumenical and other partners around the world; working towards increased missional partnerships and collaboration around the world for which the Executive Director develops a strategic plan; and expanded presence of Global Ministries at key events and in critical conversations throughout the church which will include using existing as well as developing new methodologies and tools. This role will have oversight of the Advance for Christ and His Church.

Experienced strategic thinker with proven ability to plan and execute long-term mission engagement goals with the organization’s focus in mind.
Leadership skills and qualities with proven success in guiding key decision-makers and stakeholders by your expertise and the acceptance of your input is essential to influencing the direction of the organization. Success with remote supervision management.
Strong, impactful oral and written communications skills; highly effective in representation, engagement outreach and activities.
Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
Ability to inspire trust and communicate sound reasoning in an authentic and persuasive manner.
Thorough understanding of the United Methodist Church theology and polity (structure, relationships, operations).
Must be an active member of the United Methodist Church.

Major Accountabilities

Build and lead an agency-wide Missional Engagement Team composed of staff, missionaries and others.
Nurture and solidify new partnerships with Central and annual conferences to support Global Ministries’ short-term, intermediate and long-term missional goals.
Represent Global Ministries (including UMCOR) with key judicatory, denominational and ecumenical bodies/groups as requested by the General Secretary.

Education and Experience Requirements

Master’s degree preferred or bachelor’s degree in related field with additional three (3) years of qualifying experience.
Minimum of fifteen (15) years of executive level work experience in faith based/church administration, nonprofit management, marketing, public relations, or similar professional work experience required.
Minimum of ten (10) years of experience leading a project team or managing staff required.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience working with senior leadership, trustees, and board members preferred.
Minimum fifteen (15) years working on an Annual Conference level within the UMC.
Experience fundraising in a faith-based environment preferred.

Work Hours and Conditions

FLSA Status: F/T Executive Exempt
Location: Remote
Hours: 9:00am – 5:00pm (Monday – Friday with flexible start/end time) - Evening and weekend meetings are expected.
Travel Required: US and International travel is required.
