Morningside Presbyterian Church (MPC) is a 400-member church in the heart of the
Morningside neighborhood in Atlanta, GA. The church is a welcoming congregation with deep roots in the Presbyterian tradition, active involvement and mission in our local community and beyond, and a wide embrace for all of God’s children.

Morningside Presbyterian Church’s building was built in 1949, with several capital improvement projects since its original construction. It is committed to maintaining its historical and sacred space while ensuring that the building is in good condition to support its many ministries. MPC houses Morningside Presbyterian Preschool, a mission ministry of the church that supports the education and formation of 100+ children annually. Morningside Presbyterian Church includes multiple acres of property in the heart of the Morningside neighborhood, much of which remains natural to support God’s creation.

The Role

The facilities manager is responsible for oversight of the building and grounds and managing the ongoing maintenance schedule for the church campus. This facilities manager will help develop, direct, and manage the strategic priorities for building care, including short and long-term projects.

This management includes development and oversight of the facilities budget, including contracts with and payments to vendors (power, water, trash, technology, etc.) and coordination with the sexton and Senior Pastor on expense management. Annually, the facilities manager will work with the facilities committee chairs and Senior Pastor to coordinate insurance renewals.

This role is a key church staff position that participates in monthly staff meetings led by the Senior Pastor in order to understand and assist in the implementation of upcoming facility needs.

When minor facilities projects/repairs are needed, the facilities manager will work with the sexton to identify the proper course for repair (including determining when sub-contractors are needed) and will review budget considerations to determine course of action.

When major facilities projects are undertaken, the facilities manager, with the aid of the facilities committee, will oversee project design, requests for proposal (RFPs) and bids from contractors, and completion of projects.

This role will require periodic management and oversight of the sexton in routine and emergency maintenance projects through coordination with the Senior Pastor who oversees the sexton’s daily/weekly duties.

Education/Experience/Skills

  • Experience in facilities project management and contract negotiation
  • Familiarity with writing RFPs and a strong network of subcontractors is ideal
  • General maintenance and repair skills
  • Strong organizational skills including document management
  • Financial knowledge including budgeting experience
  • Knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electric, plumbing, roof/gutters, drainage, etc.), particularly with an eye for anticipating maintenance and upgrade needs
  • Technology-savvy, proficiency at computer software programs such as MS Office 365, and experience with automated bill pay set up
  • Self-directed, efficient and proactive in addressing structural and operational issues
  • Good interpersonal skills / task oriented / excellent work ethic / strong teamwork / attention to detail / dependable
  • Physical requirements include ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. Ability to lift to 25-30 lbs.

Time and Remuneration
This position is a salaried role requiring approximately 8-10 hours of work per week and includes:

  • On-site time of 4-8 hours per week approximately 3 weeks out of every month.
  • Participation in a monthly meeting with Senior Pastor and church staff.
  • Participation in other, occasional meetings with church leadership when facilities leadership representation is needed.
  • Frequent monitoring of email when offsite to address facilities issues expeditiously
  • Impromptu site visits when required to address emergency facilities needs

Oversight: This position reports to the Senior Pastor/Head of Staff and works closely with the sexton, other members of the Church staff, and the elders on the facilities committee of the church’s Session (board).
