Position Summary:

In coordination with the Finance Committee Chairperson, Senior Pastor, SPR Chairperson and other staff and lay membership, the Financial Administrator will support the ministries of St. John United Methodist Church by overseeing financial operations and certain human resource functions. This position will ensure financial integrity of the church through adherence to operational policies and procedures, including proper internal controls, and coordinating annual audits with an outside auditor. Specific duties include the routine management of normal business operations (receipts and deposits, accounts payable, purchasing, payroll, cash management, accounting, contribution records, and other miscellaneous expenditures), financial reporting, annual budgeting and stewardship campaign participation. Human Resource responsibilities include compliance with state and federal employment laws, oversight of clergy health insurance and pension benefits administration and oversight of church personnel policies.

Reports to: Senior Pastor

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong Christian faith and life
  • College degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field
  • Relevant work experience in a church or nonprofit organization
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills
  • Adherence to strict confidentiality policies
  • Knowledge of/experience with ACS or similar software

Desired Qualifications:

· Relevant work experience in Human Resources in a church or nonprofit organization

Essential Responsibilities:

1. Financial Operations

  • Manage the business operations of the church by handling receipts and deposits, accounts payable, purchasing, payroll, cash management, accounting, contribution records, and other miscellaneous expenditures
  • Prepare deposits of weekly church contributions
  • Direct and oversee the financial operations of the church
  • Maintain effective internal controls
  • Create monthly financial reports for pastor and appropriate church officers, provide semi -annual contribution statements to church members, and assist in preparation of the annual budget
  • Work with the appropriate team in planning and promoting the annual church stewardship campaign and any capital campaign and provide any necessary reports
  • Work with outside auditors with respect to conference audit schedule and any recommendations from the auditor
  • Prepare information as needed for the United Methodist District Conference
  • Develop and recommend financial objectives, policies and procedures as needed to the Senior Pastor and Finance Committee
  • Meet with the Finance Committee and Church Council as needed
  • Prepare other financial related needs as they arise- ie PPP loans

2. Human Resources

· Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal employment laws

· Oversee church participation in conference health insurance and pension benefit programs for clergy

· Review, recommend updates to, and oversee church personnel policies

· Maintain oversight of employee leave time, as needed.

· Prepare payroll, payroll taxes, and quarterly and annual payroll tax reporting

Non-Essential Responsibilities:

· Performs other duties to support the mission of the church as needed

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Financial Responsibilities:

In conjunction with Finance Committee Chairperson, manage/oversee overall church budget and spending.
