Dunwoody United Methodist Church is seeking an experienced HR Generalist to join our dynamic, mission-driven team. This position is full-time and benefits eligible.

Position Overview: The Human Resources (HR) Generalist runs the daily functions of the HR department working closely with church leadership and other members of the Operations team to support the overall mission of the church. This position carries out responsibilities in the following functional areas: recruitment and onboarding; administering pay, benefits, and leave; implementing church policies and practices; employee relations and engagement; legal compliance; assisting in bookkeeping processes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, interviews, and facilitates the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborates with clergy and directors to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
  • Oversees background checks, employee eligibility verifications and Safe Sanctuaries certification for all staff and volunteers.
  • Facilitates new hire onboarding process, coordinating with cross-functional ministry areas to deliver an exceptional orientation and onboarding experience for staff and clergy.
  • Executes human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; health and safety; and training and development.
  • Handles employment and benefit-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.
  • Attends and participates in employee performance meetings, disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Maintains physical and digital employee files including benefits, attendance records, disciplinary concerns, and other employment-related documents.
  • Provides bookkeeping assistance to the Director of Finance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the church’s HRIS, payroll and database systems.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • Three to five years of human resource experience preferred.
  • Payroll processing and bookkeeping experience required.
  • SHRM-CP or PHR a plus.

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Work authorization requirements: Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship.
