Lecturer - Religious Studies

The Department of Religious Studies at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, invites applications for a lecturer position to begin in August 2021. Candidates with a broad range of expertise are encouraged to apply, and the successful candidate will contribute to some of the department’s curricular strengths in religion, race, gender, sexuality, health, and social change. They will also have the opportunity to offer their expertise in revising our core curriculum courses for our diverse undergraduate population. The lecturer will teach a 4-4 schedule in the academic year with the option of teaching additional summer classes. Lecturers’ overall effort divides between teaching (80%) and service (20%).
The lecturer will join an interdisciplinary department whose faculty are committed to advancing academic understandings of how religion informs and shapes public life. There are opportunities for growth and support in the position including providing leadership in shaping undergraduate core curriculum and lower division courses; university-level teaching fellowships and grants through the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, & Online Education; leadership in instructional innovation through applied learning, department and university wide mentoring; and successive promotion to the ranks of Senior Lecturer and Principal Senior Lecturer.
The selected candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Religious Studies and participate in service at the department, college, and/or university levels (essential). Applicants are required to have a PhD in Religious Studies or a related discipline at the time of the appointment (essential). We welcome a variety of methodological approaches alongside a demonstrated expertise in instructional design, pedagogical innovation, and experience engaging diverse student populations in and beyond the classroom (essential). The successful candidate should also have the ability to dynamically teach introductory courses including Introduction to World Religions (essential) as well as contribute to the department’s applied religious studies foci (preferred). Additionally, the candidate will also exhibit a commitment to building a diverse, welcoming environment for faculty, staff, and students (preferred).
