PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Nursery Team Lead/Supervisor is a part-time position with responsibility for carrying out the mission and vision of St. James United Methodist Church (SJUMC). The ministry is seeking mature, energetic and dedicated candidate with a commitment to serve youth and help create a learning environment that incorporates imaginative play, crafts and tactile sensory activities. The successful candidate will have a passion for children and the natural ability to prepare infants and toddlers to grow into curious, servant leaders who honor God, love others and walk in truth.

SCOPE

The way that the position contributes to and impacts on the organization

· The position reports to Christian Education and serves as an active and collaborative member of the Children, Middle School, Youth (CMY) ministry to nurture and empower the youngest congregants.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Major responsibilities and target accomplishments expected of the position including the typical problems encountered in carrying out the responsibilities.

· Provides safe environment and age-appropriate care which includes but is not limited to: feeding, changing diapers, escorting children to the restroom, assisting and coordinating snacks and naptime, and other needs as they arise

· Interacts with children and teach the goodness of God through singing, free play and child-friendly activities such as Bible lessons, craft projects and educational enrichment (e.g. colors, numbers, letters and words)

· Creates pleasant and inviting classroom that encourages exploration, creativity and decision-making

· Maintains a professional personal appearance, welcoming attitude and work behavior

· Collaborates with co-workers in lesson planning and coordination of classroom related activities to support growth and development

· Ensures that documentation is completed which includes, but is not limited to: attendance sheets, participation forms, medication forms, feeding plans, incident reports, three-part labels, and allergy labels

· Guides staff and servant workers on learning activities, policies and procedures, and other duties as assigned

· Maintains orderly, clean and presentable nursery space after each use

· Works with church staff to maintain adequate and timely replenishment of laundry, supplies and snacks

· Be available to work Sunday’s (including some holidays), Wednesday’s and other services/events held at the church during the week or weekend as needed

· Ensures the safety and physical well-being of the children, manage behavior without yelling or inappropriate touching, and provide equitable care to all children

· Stays until all children are secured with the child’s registered adult

· Assists in maintaining a clean classroom in accordance with the church policies and Bright from the Start Guidelines

· Relates positively to young children and staff, while also being sensitive and responsive to parents

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The knowledge, skills and attitudes required for satisfactory job performance

· Education:

· Must be at least 18 years of age with high school diploma or GED

· Experience:

· Strong spiritual and moral character; positive and upbeat demeanor, punctual and adaptable to change

· Experience caring for children between the ages of 0 - 4 for the nursery, with additional experience and/or ability to work with children up to the age of 12

· Knowledge of child development and Bright from the Start Guidelines, including general understanding of the emotional, physical and social needs of young children

· Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment and work amicably with others, including parents, church staff and volunteers.

· CDA credential preferred with minimum two years direct experience or equivalent transferrable skills.

· Specific Skills necessary to execute the essential functions of the role:

· Supervisory experience preferred

· Satisfactory completion of background check and CPR training for infants and children

· Must adhere to St. James United Methodist Church Child Protection Policy Guidelines and Childcare Operations Manual.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

· Must be able to lift 25-30 lbs. in connection with the handling of children to facilitate programs, promote child safety and respond to potential emergency situations

· Must be able to walk, squat, kneel and sit on floor with children
