Our justice-oriented, LGBTQ-affirming, progressive faith community, First Church Somerville UCC, is in search of TWO dedicated child care staff workers who will be available weekly on Sunday mornings. One staff person will help “Shepherd” our older children during Sunday School. You would build relationship and community with a group of 9-12 year old's as they experienced workshops run by members of the congregation. You will work in tandem with the member of the congregation who will be providing the religious education. Your focus will be to support the children in feeling safe, valued, and having their physical and emotional needs met while attending their workshop. We are utilizing a “Workshop Rotation Model” of Sunday School where groups of children rotate through lessons and activities to explore topics of faith and sacred story.
The second role is for our youngest children, ages 0-4. You would be caring for babies, toddlers and preschoolers while their parents were upstairs in worship. An ideal candidate will be warm, have experince with young children, and be a welcoming and consistent presence.
You will not be required to do any religious teaching, but a comfort level with being in a progressive Christian environment would be helpful.
If you are loving, reliable, engaging, at least 18 years old, and have experience with children, we’d love to hear from you. We would prefer teachers who are available throughout the year and who are interested in longer-term commitments. We especially encourage persons of color, LGBTQ+ identifying individuals and persons from other marginalized communities to apply.
Hours and compensation: Sunday School hours are 9:30-11:30 AM. Pay is $30 an hour and additional hours may also become available for those interested. Position will begin September 18th, 2022.
