Under the general supervision of the Executive Director, the Director of Nursing is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of a Resident Care Service Plan that will meet the individual needs of each resident. The Director of Nursing is also responsible for hiring, training, assignment, and supervision of Nurses and Nurses Aides.

He/She is responsible for overseeing the coordination and delegation of all medical/health components including assessments and review of all participants’ service plans. The Director of Nursing will also assist community health agencies and their nurses to provide well-coordinated services to the participants of this program.

In addition, the following skills are required:
Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice needed to give and evaluate resident care.

Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures to administer resident care.

Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer resident care.

Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.

Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide on-going resident care.

Skill in preparing and maintaining resident records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.

Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with residents, medical staff, and the public.

Ability to maintain quality control standards

Knowledge of budget process

Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations

Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures

Ability to communicate clearly (both verbally and in writing) in English

Qualification Standards:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BS preferred
Current Nursing license in the state of Massachusetts
A minimum if five years of clinical experience, with at least one of those years in a community health or long-term care setting, with supervisory experience
Ability to work well with other professionals and communicate effectively.
Proven leadership skills from past employment professional organizations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Complete admission assessment of the resident, including resident care planning.
Evaluate the effects of care delivered and recommend treatments when indicated
Assure that each resident on Traditional has a fully functioning emergency response device and that resident has received instruction relative to proper usage of device
Ensure Resident safety
Observe and report significant changes in residents’ condition
Integrate and coordinate care with other disciplines, including physicians.
Determine staffing levels necessary to meet the care needs of residents
Provide Orientation and training for staff in order to familiarize them with requirements of their position
Recruit, select, supervise, and evaluate Nurses and Nurses Aides
Ensure that introductory visits are conducted for each new resident and with each aide who will provide service to that resident
Develop, implement, and maintain an effective staff orientation program
Make rounds to ensure the performance of staff and the well being of the resident
Conduct skills evaluation for each Nurse and Nurses Aide upon hiring and at least two times per year thereafter.
Review complaints/concerns made by personnel, residents, or visitors and take action as necessary
Ensure that personnel follow established departmental policies and procedures
Ensure that staff disciplinary action is administered fairly and without regard to race. color, creed, national origin, age, sex, religion, disability, or marital status.
Maintain CONFIDENTIALITY of all resident care information
Ensure all Nurses and Nurses Aides are knowledgeable in Resident Rights
Monitor resident care to assure that all residents are treated fairly and with kindness, dignity, and respect
Review and revise service plans at least every six months or when a resident’ health status or family circumstance change.
Assist with implementing the marketing plan and promoting a positive image of the residence
Conduct staff meetings. Provide in-service education and ongoing skills training for Nurses and Nurses Aides
Provide tours of the residence and an explanation of the admission procedure to prospective residents and family members
React calmly and effectively in emergency situations
Notify resident and/or family members of changes in status that indicate need for transfer to another level of care
Communicate bother verbally and in writing in English
Communicate well with other department heads
Other duties as assigned by Executive Director
Is up to date and attends required in-services on a regular basis
Knows about and complies with all aspects of Organizational Integrity
