Summary

You will contribute substantially to all aspects of publishing Mary Baker Eddy’s writings: from concept to completion, in print and digital formats, in English and in over a dozen language translations. You will play an active role in the metaphysical shepherding of these writings in their various distribution formats.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist with specific digital, translation, and print-related projects (40%)
    • Digital: Concord
      • Play a key role on the team tasked with creating and improving Concord - including testing, marketing, suggesting feature improvements, assisting customers, tracking sales, etc.
    • Translations
      • Help support nascent translation efforts worldwide
      • Assist with translators’ paperwork and payments as needed
      • Assist with travel planning
    • Printing
      • Specific projects depending on the interests of the incumbent
  • Lead contributor for all departmental communications (30%)
    • Coordinate all field communications related to new product rollouts or other publishing-related communications
    • Take the lead on drafting customer service responses and Board correspondence replies as needed; organize and track department board action memos (BAMs)
    • Help design new ads and other marketing materials
    • As point person for all Reading Room communications with OPA content, write, coordinate, and track all messaging for bulletins and newsletters
    • Represent the department in all discussions and approvals related to needed copyright permissions for members’ and Reading Rooms local advertising efforts
    • With new products, liaise with Journal/Sentinel/Herald (JSH) marketing group on cover designs and marketing release plans
  • Provide administrative support for the department (20%)
    • Assist Publisher’s Agent with modest administrative support
    • Liaise with international and domestic distributors and booksellers to respond to their unique business needs; manage relationships and product postings
    • Provide limited administrative support to department (formatting letters, ordering office supplies, etc.)
    • Coordinate all ad postings and placement (online and in print magazines)
    • Support the department’s day-to-day financial activities
    • Represent OPA on the “P3 Admin team,” a group of assistants representing a majority of the publishing activities of The Mother Church and The Christian Science Publishing Society, working together to accomplish group projects and to support one another’s departments
  • Strategize with Publisher’s Agent regarding new processes, product ideas, and other means by which to support and forward the work of publishing and distributing the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy’s writings. (5%)
  • Coordinate various other projects for department on an as-needed basis (5%)

Regular Contacts

Contacts within every department of the Church and the Christian Science Publishing Society as well as with outside vendors, Church members, and volunteers.

Education/Experience

JOB REQUIREMENTS

College degree or equivalent experience in project management, communications, marketing, or similar preferred. Experience in the publishing, communications, or manufacturing industries a plus, as is any marketing and/or advertising experience.

Knowledge/Skills

Proactive, diplomatic problem-solver who takes initiative and has excellent organizational and follow-through skills. Learns quickly and embraces new opportunities to learn. Effective, poised, clear communicator with strong writing skills who enjoys initiating and fostering good working relationships.

Qualities

Incumbent should be spiritually discerning, humble, thoughtful, flexible, gracious, willing, and creative. Ability to maintain confidences very important.

Must be delighted at opportunity to deeply study Mary Baker Eddy’s writings in conjunction with this work.

Technology Skills

Individual must have strong word-processing skills (Google Suite and/or Microsoft Suite). Must be extremely comfortable with learning new technologies and have demonstrated facility in internet search and usage. Experience with XML, ebooks, or other aspects of digital publishing a plus; graphic design experience a plus.

Work Environment

An individual in this position should be comfortable in a highly prayerful, fast-paced, and flexible atmosphere. This position will work in the Publishing House in Boston, MA. No travel is required.

Engagement with Christian Science

Mother Church membership is required; Primary Class instruction is preferred.
