Boston College to host 4 international assemblies about Jesuit education

Boston College will host four international Jesuit conferences in July and early August. These assemblies will reportedly teach attendees the role of a Jesuit education in addressing modern issues. 

General Assembly

According to the school website, the first event that will occur is the 27th General Assembly of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU), which will take place from July 30 to Aug. 3. 

The Strategic Alliance of Catholic Research Universities (SACRU) also held its first formal meeting on July 30. The said alliance is an international network of top Catholic universities.

Meanwhile, there will also be a symposium that will shed light on Jesuit studies. "The Jesuits and the Church in History" will be held Aug. 1-4.

The International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) will host its annual assembly from Aug. 3 to 6. The theme for 2022 will be "Discerning the Future of Jesuit Higher Education." 

International Conferences 

As reported, Boston College was in the spotlight for international conferences. 

The International Association of Jesuit Engineering Schools (IAJES) Summit hosted its event from July 13 to 15. Its theme was "Jesuit Engineering Vision for a Better World." 

According to the report, Boston College is highlighting its international presence in assemblies that have a leadership role in Catholic education. 

James F. Keenan, S.J., told the news outlet that the college's global engagement was remarkable this summer in Chestnut Hill. Keenan is the vice Provost for Global Engagement. 

He added that the program was the result of their capacity to lead. 

Father Keenan commended University Pres. William P. Leahy, S.J., for his initiatives. 

He pointed out that Boston Colleges has been successful in building bridges by scheduling these assemblies. The Catholic priest added that their mutual engagement had a lasting effect. 

Archbishop Cardinal Sean O'Malley will celebrate a Mass on Wednesday, Aug. 3. It is a way of welcoming the attendees of the international conference. 

Father Leahy will welcome the attendees to the event. University Secretary Casey Beaumier, S.J., will reportedly join Father Leahy in giving the greetings. 

Historian Pierre-Antoine Fabre will provide the keynote address. Fabre is the director of studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. 

There are panel discussions and plenary sessions during the symposium, as well.  

As reported, attendees are allowed to examine and discuss topics like "Foundations in Mission Lands: The Jesuits and the Local Clergy." The speakers will also address "Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Jesuit Missions to China." 

Other topics that will be discussed during the symposium include "The Jesuits and Politics in the Early Modern Church," "Jesuit Universities as Catholic Institutions in the Global, Contemporary Context," and "The Jesuit and the Church: Trajectories and Perspectives."

Prof. Glenn Gaudette hosted an interactive, participatory session during the conference. He is the chair of the Engineering Department. 

Father Keenan also held collaborative working sessions and reflection sessions for the attendees. 

The closing session was led by the Society of Jesus Higher Education Secretary Joseph Christie, S.J. 

About 55 attendees were present during the conference. They represented over 23 educational institutions around the country. 

According to the school website, Boston College is a Jesuit Catholic university. They believe in learning to search for truth to be able to serve others.
