Eliot Church UCC elects new pastor from Boston

A Boston college student will serve Eliot Church UCC in Newton, Ma., as its 14th Settled Pastor. Rev. Domenik Ackermann will lead his inaugural service at the church grounds on Sunday, Aug. 21.

Master's in Theology

According to a report with Patch, the pastor graduated in 2017 with a Master's in Theology. He also studied in Göttingen, Heidelberg, and Beirut.

There, he focused his learnings on ecumenical dialogue and interfaith relations.

He earned a scholarship from the Lutheran World Federation while studying in Germany. The pastor would study Orthodox Christianity and Islam in Lebanon.

After he graduated, the pastor decided to take further studies.

He had a passion for Jewish-Christian dialogue. The faith leader also decided to focus his sights on worship and liturgy.

Moving to Boston

The pastor began his doctorate at Boston College in 2018. During this time, he studied Jewish and Christian forms of prayer.

He is currently working on his dissertation. According to the report, it focuses on developing a "theology of prayerfulness through the engagement of Jewish and Christian sources."

The pastor was raised in the German Protestant Church (EKD). He has his roots in the German Lutheran tradition.

When he first moved to the United States, he became part of the UCC.

He also began his first full-time position as an associate pastor at ERUCC in Frederick.

He took the post between January and July 2018. The pastor moved to Boston later that year.

Reverend Domenik has served Acton Congregational Church as its Director of Family Ministries. He also worked as the Associate Minister for Education at West Parish Church in Andover.

The pastor is interested in ecumenical issues, interfaith dialogue, and worship.

At the National Council of Churches, Reverend Domenik co-represents the United Church of Christ at the Jewish-Christian dialogue table.

Boston College

According to the Boston College website, the school is the first institution of higher education to operate in Boston.

Today, it remains to be one of the nation's top-performing universities. It is also considered a leader in the liberal arts, scientific inquiry, and student formation.

Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus, known as the Jesuits. They had a mission to educate Boston's Irish, mostly Catholic immigrants.

The school opened its doors on Sept. 5, 1864. At that time, Boston College had its humble beginnings in a building on Harrison Avenue in Boston's South End. It was considered to be a "small streetcar college" for students.

These days, Boston College continues to build upon its traditions. It continues its mission of being the national leader in the liberal arts.

The school also aims to fulfill its Jesuit Catholic mission of faith and service. They make it their mission to develop model programs for their students' faith and academic needs.

They design these programs to support students in their faith formation.

The school's programs began as an undergraduate liberal arts college. It soon added more graduate programs and professional schools to fulfill its charter as a university.
