The Symphony Church in Boston recently invited young adults starting their journey in college to “Freshman Discipleship.”
Freshman Discipleship
According to the church’s website, the event happened from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at the Symphony Church Office. The church said it is a discipleship course specially made for first-year students.
The course is meant to help the students to follow Jesus in college and “live a life that is full of devotion, fellowship, and mission.” Apart from the course, it is an opportunity for first-year students to know other first-year students from other campuses.
The 10-day course is open for first-year students for $50, which will be used for the dinners shared during the event.
About Symphony Church
The church explained that it seeks to unite people so they can “worship God and serve one another.”
The church reportedly serves three congregations: the College Congregation, the Young Adult Micro-Church, and the Virtual Congregation.
The church says that it is a member of Acts Ministries International.
History of Symphony Church
The church’s history page reveals it officially launched on Sept. 5, 2010, but its roots started in 2003 when God called Barry Kang to serve college students for God.
Kang reportedly left his life as a bond trader in Los Angeles to become a part of the Church of Southland as its college pastor.
In 2008, the pastor went to the Grace Covenant Church in Philadelphia. In 2010, the church sent out the pastor and other church planters to Boston, and in the same year, the first service of the Symphony Church happened at the MATCH School.
Today, the church has become a church with multiple locations that serves a “vibrant community of college students, single young adults, young married couples, and families.”
About Pastor Barry Kang
According to the church, Pastor Barry Kang was a bond trader for a “boutique investment management company” before following his calling.
The pastor is a Stanford graduate with a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. Currently, he is working on his thesis project for his Doctorate in Ministry. He also received training from the Grace Covenant Church.
Today, the pastor lives with his family in Arlington, Mass.
Acts Ministries International
According to the organization’s page, it is a global community of churches that seek to “model the spirituality, vision, and partnership exemplified in the book of Acts.” Also, it is committed to developing disciples within the churches and spreading the Word of God through programs such as church plantings and missions.
The community says that all the churches under it follow an everyday spirituality shown through worship, prayer, and ministry. Also, it says that it values supervision and accountability between churches.
Starting in 2002, it has become a church community spread over eight countries and twenty cities. The church is led by pastors Keith Park, Barry Kang, Young Kim, Danny Han, and Ulysses Wang.
