The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland was founded on April 23, 1847. It is the twenty-third largest diocese in the United States. Under the leadership of the Most Reverend Edward J. Malesic, the diocese encompasses the counties of Cuyahoga, Summit, Lorain, Lake, Geauga, Medina, Wayne, and Ashland. There are more than 670,000 Catholics in the Diocese and Catholic Charities. There are 184 parishes, 110 Catholic schools, one pastoral center, and one mission office within the diocese. The cathedral is the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, located in downtown Cleveland. Primary Function:
The Director of the African American Catholic Ministry Office supports pastors and pastoral leadership staff who serve the African American Catholic Community in evangelization, faith formation, leadership development, ministry development, social concerns, liturgical celebration, and volunteer training. Further, the Director collaborates with the offices and departments of the Catholic Community and the civic community to achieve unity and respect among all people regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity.
Responsibilities:
Develops and implements an ongoing pastoral plan for this ministry in partnership with clerical staff and ministry leaders serving the African American Catholic Community.
Develops and coordinates programs, liturgies, and events that evangelize and enrich the visibility and vitality of the African American Catholic presence.
Provides formation and assists African American Catholics in attaining leadership roles in the diocese.
Encourages and provides opportunities for community members to consider vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, and participation in the lay ecclesial ministry certification process.
Works closely with diocesan offices, schools, and agencies to seek out opportunities for collaboration and provides consultation, resources, and technical assistance in sensitizing personnel to the gifts and needs of the African American Catholic Community.
Consults with and serves on various boards and committees in local Catholic and civic communities.
Directs the Office's day-to-day operations and oversees planning, evaluation, and goal-setting procedures.
Establishes and manages the budget and assists with the African American Native American Grant process.
Serves as a representative to the following:
National Black Catholic Congress (NBCC)
National Association of Black Catholic Administrators (NABCA)- national and regional level
Ohio Commission of African American Catholics
Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver
Cleveland Diocesan Racism Committee
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
Assumes other responsibilities as needed or directed.
Qualifications:
Must be a practicing Catholic and an active member of the Catholic Church committed to the mission, ministry, and values of the Roman Catholic Church.
Bachelor’s degree with three to five years of experience in increasingly responsible positions; experience in working in a collaborative style with others in a parish or diocesan positions and demonstrates the potential for working with other diocesan and national offices for the benefit of the Church and the African American Catholic Community.
Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
