ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF RACIAL RELATIONS

Department: Office of Life, Justice, and Peace

Status: Exempt, Full Time

Salary Range: $65,623 - $100,183

The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. Candidates are paid at the minimum of the salary range or no higher than the first quartile of the salary range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training, and other department needs.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Office of Life, Justice and Peace (OLJP) implements the vision of Archbishop José Gomez on

social issues by offering strategic leadership to parishes and community partners through

education, advocacy, prayer and service. OLJP promotes the common good, rooting

initiatives in the reality that each person is created by God for relationship with him and in

community with others.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles, with our vast ethnic, cultural and economic diversity, is a small manifestation of the universal Church. Promoting authentic human development in this context requires a culture of encounter and a transformative commitment to solidarity.

OLJP focuses on the issues of abortion, assisted suicide, death penalty, human trafficking, homelessness, poverty, foster care, healthcare, post-abortion healing, religious freedom, and environmental justice within the context of developing an authentic human ecology for the communities of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

The Associate Director for Racial Relations (ADRR) of OLJP is responsible for directing and overseeing the racial relations ministry and outreach for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles working with leaders in parishes and schools within the Archdiocese and strategic partners in the community.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Because all Archdiocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work.

  • Assess needs of parishes, schools and families within the Archdiocese to determine strategy for creation and execution of a new Archdiocesan-wide racial relations initiative.
  • Utilize detailed knowledge of missionary discipleship and Church teaching and parish structure to evaluate priorities, timing, necessary resources, and implementation of new initiative.
    • Establish a strategic plan.
    • Develop annual operations budget for any new resources and events, including training and support services.
    • Create marketing plan for parishes and schools.
  • Create a sustainable parish leadership training program in parishes throughout the Archdiocese on topics of racial relations and justice:
    • Construct and facilitate curricula based on Catholic social doctrine and focusing on OLJP goals and objectives.
    • Identify and train speakers/facilitators/workshop leaders.
    • Organize regular meetings with parish leaders.
    • Provide on-going support for leaders and teams.
    • Coordinate on-going assessment of racial relations and justice programs within the Archdiocese.
  • Direct and Create support programs and resources including:
    • Curricula
    • Retreats
    • Events
    • Trainings
    • Parish materials
    • Articles for media
    • Social Media content
    • Speakers’ list (both national and from the ADLA) for recommendation to parishes, schools, and Archdiocesan events.
  • Responsible for keeping abreast of current Catholic Church literature: globally, nationwide, statewide, and locally.
  • Provide formal presentations and timely information to OLJP team and other ADLA leaders, lay leaders, donors, and parish groups on effectiveness of strategy and initiative goals.
  • Direct a monthly Zoom meeting with Deanery Liaisons to discuss the ministry around racial relations within each deanery.
  • Continue to assist and foster the racial relations outreach in the 16 pilot parishes and schools established by the Taskforce on Racism.
  • Responsible to meet with new potential parishes and schools who are wanting to begin racial relations ministry within their parishes and schools.
  • Oversee and Direct the Racial Relations Commission for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
    • Monthly Zoom meetings/ Quarterly in person meetings
  • Strategic Communications: Assist the Senior Director and other program staff in message development and strategies to advance the mission of OLJP and OneLife LA.
  • Collaborate: Work with other ACC departments. Office of Vicar for Clergy, Office of the Diaconate, Office of Vocations, Office of Evangelization, Department of Catholic Schools, Office of Religious Education, Office of Development, Office of Communications, Digital, and Human Resources.
  • Collaborate with the Seminary to provide resources and formation.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with key pastors, regional bishops, community leaders, and leaders in other faith communities to facilitate effective collaboration and leadership development.
  • Represent OLJP on various committees, teams, and at regional and national meetings as requested.
  • Based on information received from parishes, schools, and parish leaders, provide recommendations for new initiatives to OLJP team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, typically:

  • Master’s degree highly preferred.
  • Practicing Catholic with detailed knowledge of Catholic social doctrine.
  • At least 8 years’ experience leading volunteers in social ministry.
  • Preferred strong relationship with ADLA parishes and pastors.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Ability to communicate the precepts of the Faith.
  • Demonstrated experience in racial relations through Biblical context and reference.
  • Regional and national knowledge of racial relations and justice

Skill in:

  • Outstanding communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver oral and written reports and presentations to a variety of audiences. Strong organizational and time management skills.

Ability to:

  • Ability to accomplish projects with little supervision.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

  • Occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Sit for sustained periods of time on a daily basis.
  • Perform task requiring intermittent bending, stooping and walking.
  • Sustain frequent movement of the fingers, wrists, hands, and arms.
