ASSOCIATE EDITOR - ANGELUS NEWS

Salary Range: $65,623 - $100,183

The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. Candidates are paid at the minimum of the salary range or no higher than the first quartile of the salary range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training, and other department needs.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Associate Editor for Angelus will assist the Editor-in-Chief in overseeing production of the print and digital versions of Angelus, as well as Angelus en Español’s digital platforms.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Because all Archdiocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work.

  • Works closely with the Editor-in-Chief to determine, assign, edit, and produce content for each bi-weekly edition of Angelus — this includes news and feature coverage of Los Angeles and California politics and life; coverage of all aspects of the life of the local Church; coverage of national and international news, issues and trends; cultural coverage (movies, books, the arts, sports; “ideas” and opinion-journalism); and content related to spiritual formation, Catholic culture and Catholic living.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with team of contributing writers and photographers.
  • Assists Editor-in-Chief to identify and develop new talent to serve as writers and photographers across Angelus News platforms.
  • Assists Editor-in-Chief with development and implementation of plans for future growth of Angelus multimedia platform and magazine.
  • Manage Angelus En Español’s digital platforms. This includes:
    • Updating the site with original Spanish-language content, translated Angelus content, and Spanish-language content from Angelus’s editorial partners.
    • Curating and updating the website’s home and category pages daily.
    • Strategizing and manages all social media for Angelus en Español (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) to promote website content.
  • Oversees the assigning and editing of Spanish-language content from contributing writers under the direction of the Editor-in-Chief.
  • Assigns a selection of original Angelus News content for translation to Spanish.
  • Coordinates with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ Digital Team for cross-sharing of relevant Angelus and ADLA digital content, as well as for website troubleshooting and day-to-day functionality issues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Active member of a Roman Catholic faith community
  • Interest in and understanding of the Catholic Church’s teachings and mission.
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or relevant work experience preferably in journalism and/or communications.
  • At least five years working experience in a related position, preferably with a newspaper or magazine, preferred.
  • Fully bilingual in English and Spanish

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Exceptional organizational, time management, and communication skills; Ability to juggle a variety of initiatives and adjust to changing timelines and priorities.
  • Deep and passionate engagement with events in the Church and the world and directions in culture and the capacity to understand and interpret these from the standpoint of an authentic Catholic teaching and sensibility.
  • Thorough working knowledge of the Roman Catholic Church (including its teachings and doctrine) and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to provide accurate information to the public.
  • Fluency in social media platforms for both personal and newsgathering purposes

Skills in:

  • Must have excellent written communication skills in both English and Spanish with a focus on grammar and spelling.
  • Strong English and Spanish copywriting skills, both short- and long-form content.
  • Tech-savvy; high proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Drive)
  • Familiarity with WordPress, HTML, as well as photo editing programs Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Social media management (posting, scheduling, and overall strategy)

Ability to:

  • Work well independently and can be relied on to get the job done right.
  • Find, develop, and assign news stories relating to the life of the Church in Southern California, Latin America, and around the world.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Sit for sustained periods of time on a daily basis.
  • Perform tasks requiring intermittent bending, stooping, and walking
  • Sustain frequent movement of the fingers, wrists, hands, and arms.
