Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc., one of the largest human services providers in California, operates a variety of programs to serve the poor and strives to find permanent solutions to crisis situations by offering clients the tools and resources needed to achieve greater self-reliance and stability in their lives.

Angel’s Flight a shelter for homeless, run-a-way and at risk youth ages 10-17 years old is seeking an experienced cook to prepare and present nutritious meals for the guest that live in the shelter. Under the direction of the Site Supervisor, the cook will be responsible for ensuring the highest quality meals are prepared.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates, plans and prepares balanced, nutritious meals for shelter guests
  • Set up and stock stations with all necessary supplies
  • Prepare food for service (e.g. chopping vegetables, butchering meat, or preparing sauces)
  • Stock inventory appropriately
  • Monitors waste and other food costs controls
  • Assumes responsibility for quality, food safety/sanitation and timeliness of meals serve
  • Must be able to plan menus, estimate consumption and cooking according to standard recipes
  • May prepare and bake bread, rolls, muffins, biscuits, cakes, pies, puddings and other foods
  • Stock and maintain sufficient levels of food products and equipment at all stations to ensure smooth service
  • Maintains a clean and sanitary kitchen, storeroom, freezer, refrigerator, oven, ranges, fryers and other kitchen equipment
  • Maintain a good working relationship with staff and guest
  • Will arrange for or will pick up donations or food from store
  • Offer cooking life skills to clients

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma required
  • Must be 18 years old or older
  • Food Handler certification Required and at least one year of technical or specialized training
  • Proven experience as a cook
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to operate basic kitchen equipment, including but not limited to stoves, knives, grill press and ovens
  • Adheres to all safe food handling principles
  • Meets uniform and grooming standards and maintains them throughout the shift.
  • Valid California Driver’s Licensing Preferred.
  • Able to read, write, have basic math skills including understanding of units of measure.
  • Must have computer knowledge to develop menus and make food orders
  • Fingerprints and drug screen required

Essential Functions:
The physical demands and work environment are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to stand for extended periods of time and to lift, push and pull boxes of food and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach. Must be able to stand and walk throughout an eight (8) hour shift. Must be able to tolerate heat in kitchen and freezer areas.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.04 per hour
