Position Summary

The role of the Corps Program Assistant is to assist the Corps Officer in areas of program, fund-raising, and other functions of the operation of the Corps. This will involve program development, leadership, cultivation and training, visitation and spiritual nurturing of participants and their families.

Essential Functions

The Program Coordinator will be responsible for the following areas of ministry at the Corps, working alongside the Corps Officer to plan and implement programming with the congregation and the surrounding community.

  • Coordinate implementation and leadership of Corps Programming for adults, such as: English Sunday School, EM Bible Study, Small Groups and Fellowship event.
  • Coordinate and support Salvation Army Youth Programs, such as, Troops, Sunday School, YPL, Corps Cadets, Junior Soldiers, etc. as coordinated by officer and other corps ministry leaders.
  • Assist in leading and planning Sunday Morning worship and meetings to integrate thematic elements, worship songs and Salvation Army meeting standards and observances.
  • Plan for yearly holiday observances within the worship calendar, including Christmas, Mother’s Day, Easter, etc.
  • Planning and implementing special events for the Corps, working with Corps Officers
  • Support the Corps Officer in implementing various projects that complement the vision of the corps, such as Corps Clean Ups, EDS, service projects, office duties such as data entry, filing and program reports, etc.
  • Work with the Corps Officer on various aspects of the Summer Camping Programs, Christmas programming, including, but not limited to Kettles, Adopt a Family, Angel Tree, Toy Drives, and Thanksgiving Meal.
  • Assist and support with transportation needs for corps and community programs.
  • Support in the Corps Social Service programs as outline by officers.

As necessary, the Corps Officer may give the Program Assistant other specific assignments that relate to and support the administrative, evangelistic, and discipleship elements of the Corps.

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax, and telephone. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years or older, a Christian active within a Salvation Army Corps.
  • Two or more years of experience in Salvation Army programs.
  • Must possess a thorough working knowledge of, and give competent instruction in, Salvation Army doctrine.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate programs that will be used to draw people to Jesus and consider The Salvation Army as a church home.
  • Must be able to utilize all necessary office and ministry equipment adequately (i.e., computers, copy machines, video projectors, etc.)
  • Ability to work independently or with other staff members.
  • Ability to work and conduct oneself in a professional manner.
  • Must be able to keep work area organized, have good time management skills and be able to complete necessary reports in a timely manner.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Retain a driver’s license, be able to drive Salvation Army vehicles and pass all necessary background checks.
  • Must be aware of, implement, and observe all necessary Child Safety (Protecting the Mission) policies. A criminal background check is required by said policies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral written forms.
