English Teacher – Long Term Substitute

Verbum Dei Jesuit High School is a Catholic high school located in Watts with an enrollment of approximately 320 students. Part of the Cristo Rey Network, Verbum Dei Jesuit offers young men from supportive families of limited resources a college prep curriculum, corporate work experience, and faith formation that prepare them to graduate from college as men-with-and-for-others who serve their communities and pursue a more just and humane world for all. Verbum Dei aims to be a place where students experience the world as it could be, not as it is for too many of them.
Our innovative Corporate Work Study Program through the Cristo Rey Network is one of the early pioneers of the successful model that now spans 37+ Cristo Rey Network schools. This is the only network of high schools in the country that integrate four years of rigorous college preparatory academics with four years of professional work experience.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Primary Duties:
Expected to be on campus Monday-Friday, 7:30am – 3:45pm, unless otherwise determined between the specific Teacher and the Vice Principal or the Principal.
Teach 5 sections of English
Create and share instructional plans before their first scheduled class of the week
Create and maintain a learning environment that is physically and emotionally safe for all students.
May be requested to participate in meetings to plan instruction or discuss students.
Additional Duties:
weekly yard duty
proctoring/study hall monitoring
after-school tutoring
substitute teaching
All Verbum Dei teachers need to feel comfortable with, and actively participate in, the spiritual and co-curricular aspects of the school.

Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Candidates must have previous experience teaching in a high school setting or with high school students.
- Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in English or a related field
- Candidates must be knowledgeable, sensitive, and inclusive of all cultures, in particular those served by Verbum Dei and of the local community.
- Candidates must possess a willingness to promote all areas of Jesuit education.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters degree and/or California Teaching Credential
- Prior background and experience in the study, practice and teaching of English, especially in an urban environment.
- Successful experience working with students and parents in an urban setting.
