The Library Assistant position is a temporary, non-exempt position that reports to the Librarian and Research Instructor. The length of employment for this position is February-June. The Library Assistant is responsible for performing library clerical tasks and assisting students and faculty with information services. Hours are 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Friday, with revised and extended hours during semester exam study week.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists the Librarian and Research Instructor with performing daily operating procedures, including opening and closing procedures.
Assists the Librarian and Research Instructor with supervising students and ensuring library policies and procedures are followed. Provides student supervision during breaks, X-period, and after school.
Assists the Librarian and Research Instructor with maintaining the order of the physical space.
Oversees circulation desk procedures using library automation software (Follett Destiny).
Runs circulation and related reports using library automation software as requested by the *Librarian and Research Instructor. Generates and sends overdue material notices and renewal reminders to students and faculty. Notifies students and faculty when reserved or requested materials are available for pick up.
Assists with developing and weeding the library collection, including the acquisition of new materials and discarding damaged or outdated materials.
Assists with the processing and cataloging of new library materials and repairing damaged or worn materials.
Shelves and organizes library materials by genre.
Performs physical inventory of library collection to ensure the accuracy of library catalog records.
Assists the Librarian and Research Instructor with creating signage and book displays and promoting resources on library social media accounts.
Assists students and faculty with routine catalog and database searches. Provides basic reference and research assistance under the supervision of the Librarian and Research
Instructor or in the Librarian and Research Instructor’s absence.
Assists the Librarian and Research Instructor with keeping students on task during library instruction and supervising students during library programming and activities.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
High School diploma required. AA or BA/BS preferred.
Basic or working knowledge of standard library operating procedures, software, systems, and resources. Experience working in a library setting as a library aide/clerk, library page, or similar is highly desired.
Ability to relate to high school students and build positive relationships while maintaining healthy boundaries.
Some experience working with adolescents in an educational or library setting is desired.
Familiarity and competence across cultures and multiple perspectives are desired.
Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of and skill in using audiovisual equipment, office equipment, computers, and/or the ability to learn the use of equipment quickly with some training.
Demonstrated ability to perform basic clerical tasks and communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, and parents.
Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
