Lost Histories: The Problem of Anglican Exceptionalism and Honest Remembering
Wednesday, February 16, 6:30 - 8:00 PM
Beyond Tradition: The Necessity of Experience and Memory as a Spiritual Practice
Forty years ago, Diana Butler Bass, then a student at an evangelical college, walked into an Episcopal Church and embraced Anglicanism as her own. In those decades, she has written specifically on the history of the Episcopal Church. Still, she is known more widely as a historian of American Protestantism, an observer of trends in religion, and an advocate of progressive Christianity. However, there is a recognizably and faithfully Anglican poetic and theological voice at the heart of her work. In these lectures, Dr. Bass draws from decades of her work to reflect on the centrality of memory to Anglican identity, the craft of history, remembering as a spiritual practice, the relationship between tradition and experience, and the urgent need to strengthen churches as communities of narrative memory.
Please visit Dr. Bass’s website for more information and her blog, “The Cottage.”
As of 1/10/22, the Paddock Lectures are currently scheduled to be LIVESTREAMED. No IN PERSON tickets are available due to pandemic attendance restrictions. If IN PERSON tickets become available, an announcement will be made via email and at gts.edu/paddock2022.
