About this event
This 1866 Gothic Revival church was constructed of locally quarried , green-gray Bronx gneiss with red-brick trim and a polychrome slate roof with red and gray shingles. The church was one of Richard M. Upjohn’s earliest commissions.
Richard M. was the son of renowned ecclesiastical architect Richard Upjohn, architect of Trinity Church Wall Street, who worked primarily with the Gothic Revival style. The interior features exposed wood roof trusses, polychrome tile floor, carved wood trim, and stenciling on the chancel walls. The church has long-standing connections with City dignitaries, with a stained-glass window donated in memory of Fiorello La Guardia, and an altar rail donated by the Yankee legend Babe Ruth in memory of his teammate Lou Gehrig.
