Job Summary:
The role of Director of Communications & Media is responsible for overseeing and directing the internal and external communications of The Riverside Church and is the designated spokesperson for The Riverside Church to all media and outside organizations. Essential Job Responsibilities:
Communications:
Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic communications program that supports and advances the mission, vision, goals and objectives of The Riverside Church.
Build and foster solid working relationships with the Church’s program ministers and serve as the communications liaison for all programs, staff and parishioners.
Establish first-class communications vehicles for new and existing initiatives, programs and services, making use of cutting-edge web-based and media resources.
Conduct a communications audit; evaluate and lead new branding and positioning initiatives.
Establish and develop relationships with various external audiences, including the media, public affairs offices, universities, and members of the community at large.
Collaborate on developing programs and events that attract leading thinkers to Riverside Church who will foster and emphasize Riverside’s position as a flagship for progressive churches.
Oversee the planning of all communications activities, including but not limited to: establishing a timetable, reviewing news materials, responding to media inquiries, arranging for media participation, promoting spokespeople, and setting up media interviews.
As the designated spokesperson for The Riverside Church, respond to media requests for information and facilitate media interviews and events with spokespersons, dignitaries, etc.
Review, research and update the approved annual news media and public relations policies.
Serve as chief editor for news releases, materials, fact sheets, talking points for the publicity and promotion of The Riverside Church.
Lead the Media and Communications team to integrate their efforts on communications programs and initiatives, including the standardization of the Riverside Church logos and branding materials.
Promotes team and leadership development, fosters teamwork, and builds working relationships by coaching and providing feedback.
Responsible for the Church Calendar.

Experience and Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience & training in communications or related discipline
Master of Divinity degree or some theological training preferred but not required.
Minimum of 8+ years experience in communications, public relations, and marketing or related discipline, preferably with a not-for-profit organization
Proven ability to design, develop and implement strategic communications programs
Responsible for maintaining and creating content for the Church Website and Calendar.
Solid understanding of best practice in digital engagement, transmedia storytelling, and communications innovation
Excellent editorial and communications skills both verbal and written
Demonstrated experience in media relations and press strategy including positive relationships with major press outlets
Experienced in managing special events and media tours independently
Strong development and stewardship experience preferably for a large multifaceted not for profit organization, preferably a religious institution.
Strong organizational skills with outstanding detail orientation
Demonstrated ability to work with and manage people/teams in a changing environment to deliver value added results to the Riverside Church
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate ideas and persuade others to accomplish challenging goals & objectives
A familiarity with and appreciation for The Riverside Church and its many programs
Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, to incorporating their principles into communications work streams, and to upholding and modeling anti-racist values and best practices
Strong familiarity with social media platforms, their utility in amplifying messages, and their role as conveyors of rumors and mis/disinformation.
Ability to think clearly and make decisions under stress, and analyze, synthesize and present complex information in a convincing, straightforward, and clear manner
Ability to effectively present information on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Strong familiarity with social media platforms and WordPress.
Highly proficient in Adobe InDesign, Canva, and Photoshop.
Strong interest and understanding in media and communications emerging technologies including digital and web based public
