PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

  • Under the direct supervision and collaboration with the Director of Pastoral Activities designs, plans, organizes, develops, supervises, and evaluates the following facets of the Office of Social Justice and Outreach Ministries: Senior Ministry, Emergency Assistance Ministry (EAM), Adopt-a-Family and Giving Tree programs; encouragement of all organizations, programs, and members of St. Patrick Catholic Community (SPCC) to be involved in work for systemic change and/or direct service; maintenance of relationships, as appropriate, with community services with which SPCC is already involved – including but not limited to City of Scottsdale Age Friendly and partnerships within the Behavioral Health Initiative, and networking with other existing social ministries in the larger community to establish and build relationships; participates in legislative awareness and appropriate advocacy; maintains a library of related reference materials; acts as a liaison between the parish, and wider civic and church communities; maintains professional competency and performs other job-related tasks as deemed necessary and/or assigned by the Pastor.

DUTIES OF THE JOB:

  • Researches and stays up to date with Church and United States Catholic Conference Social Teaching documents; establishes solid grounding for actions through distinguishing between social justice and charity outreach extending into both of these areas, justice leading the way; through collaboration and support of the Director of Pastoral Activities designs, implements, and evaluates process for educating community in the Gospel issues of justice and charity, in coordination with Liturgy, since education grounded in prayer is central to this vision.
  • Maintains and builds, as deemed appropriate, relationships with community services with which SPCC is already involved which match the goals of this vision; networks with existing social ministries in the larger community in order to establish relationships through which SPCC can appropriately collaborate with and support these ministries.
  • Maintains the Emergency Assistance Ministry (EAM) in the areas of intake interviews, needs assessment, and short-term assistance for provision of emergency assistance to those in need within the parish boundaries, and coordinating with the Social Service Agency for Scottsdale, Vista del Camino and parish SVDP’s, as appropriate for long-term case management.
  • Co-coordinates with the Director of Pastoral Activities the raising of issues to the community which reflect the message and challenge of the Gospel and the Church’s social teaching, encourages a response based on this information, nurtures SPCC members into social ministries, and helps mentor those discerning how best to use their time and talent to serve the larger community and work for justice.
  • Gains and maintains an up to date understanding of state and national legislation, and encourages the involvement of the community in advocacy roles as appropriate.
  • Develops and implements ministry to senior adults: surveys and evaluates parish senior needs; develops a comprehensive program for ministry to senior adults.
  • Serves as liaison to community programs on senior living. Collaborates with City of Scottsdale Senior Center programs; collaborates with Honor Health Services.
  • Coordinates all parish charity drives by developing and implementing an annual drive calendar. Works with staff and ministry leaders to develop the annual calendar so as to avoid donor fatigue.
  • Participates in personal and professional development: attends continuing education classes/workshops; participates as member of professional organizations.
  • Maintains overall smooth operation of the Social Justice and Outreach Ministries area in a mature, efficient, and professional manner, maintaining confidentiality, preparing reports on time to meet established deadlines.
  • Performs any other position-related tasks as deemed necessary or assigned by Pastor.

Requirements:

JOB SPECIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theology, and/or Social Work with theology courses, with a strong background in administration and supervision preferred.
  • Two (2) years of experience in adult formation, social justice work, administration and supervision preferred.
  • Must have basic knowledge of management and administration; must have knowledge of trends in the fields of social justice and outreach ministry; must have budgeting and fiscal sense; must be computer literate.
  • Must be able to work under pressure; must initiate, be creative and anticipate solutions and be able to work with differing personalities; must be able to work under frequent interruptions; must be able to work within team ministry as member of parish staff; must be able to vision and create objectives to meet vision.
  • Must have flexibility in dealing with all types of personalities; must be accurate in finances and statistical data; must be dexterous in organizing programs.
  • Good leadership skills to include: collaboration, consulting, facilitating, active listening, oral and written communication.
  • Ability to develop and administer programs and appropriate budget to meet assessed needs.
  • Remain current on pastoral, spiritual, psychological, ecclesiastical and management techniques through reading, attending workshops and doing research in order to provide direction to parish groups.
  • Must be available to work nights, and/or weekends as required to perform duties.
  • Complete and Maintain Diocesan Safe Environment Training as required by the Diocese.
  • Knowledge of all diocesan guidelines and procedures.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona Driver’s License and own personal transportation.
  • Employee is subject to Diocesan and parish personnel policies prescribed for all personnel.
