Purpose and Scope

To support the Diocese of Phoenix in its mission to Encounter the Living Christ, this position provides hope and healing to the Diocese of Phoenix community (parishes, schools, missions, outside diocesan agencies, and Diocesan Pastoral Center) through different types of mental health awareness programs and resources. The focus of this office will be education, accompaniment, and advocacy related to mental health. The mission of this office will be to help create pastoral environments where people living with mental illness can meet, share their experiences and their Catholic faith with others, and to grow spiritually in their relationship with God.

Essential Job Functions

Leads the development and implementation of the mental health awareness strategic plan and goals that will support the needs of the diocese and meet expected outcomes.
Develops and maintains a Mental Health Ministry Network consisting of ministry leaders in the parishes who are trained and can be quickly identified by those that are seeking accompaniment.
Develops and maintains a Diocesan Therapists Referral Network to be shared with clergy, religious, and laity.
Collaborates with diocesan offices to develop training and formation opportunities for clergy, religious, and laity to learn more about mental health.
Adheres to the principles in the Catholic Mental Health Ministry Guidelines for the implementation of future parish ministries.
Communicates effectively with clergy, religious, parishes and other diocesan departments as well as other mental health community partners to implement the Mental Health Ministry Plan and mental health ministry in general (in person meetings, website, email, newsletters, etc.).
Responsible for mental health ministry program related budgets.
Serves on Diocesan related committees, working groups, and other bodies as assigned.
Spearheads the development and implementation of the diocesan mental health advisory board that will consist of individuals working in mental health or related fields to provide guidance, advice, and assistance in planning.

Additional Job Functions

Serves as a resource for Diocesan Pastoral Center Offices and parishes.
Performs any other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience in public speaking and presentations before small and large groups.
Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work independently, set schedules, prioritize tasks, and work with other members of the office in a team setting.
Familiarity with community support systems, health care, and Diocese of Phoenix human resources policies and programs etc.
Must be self-motivated and ability to present oneself professionally.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer software programs.
Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
Ability to successfully complete the Mental Health Minister Training and Mental Health First Aid.
Flexibility in days and hours available for scheduled work including weekends.
Ability to maintain confidentiality is essential.

Minimum Qualifications

Active practicing Catholic who is in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.
Able to articulate a clear understanding of the Catholic faith and to serve as a committed witness to its mission.
Bachelor’s degree in related field (e.g., counseling, psychology, social work, nursing, etc.), strongly preferred.
A minimum of three yeas working in a professional office environment or other professional setting is strongly preferred.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment.
This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some overnight travel may be necessary. Additionally, some filing is required, and this would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand, as necessary.
