What We Seek
The Sexton serves to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and readiness of Church facilities to enable the work and ministry of the congregation and to create a pleasant atmosphere for members, guests and staff.
This includes deep cleaning of the kitchen, restrooms, church, general gathering spaces, as well as basic maintenance and groundskeeping chores.
The Sexton performs custodial duties in and around All Saints’ Episcopal Church & Day School facilities; troubleshoots and performs minor repairs and responds to emergency calls for service; implements setups and takedown for a variety of church, school, and community events; and, works closely with Church and Day
School staff to meet its custodial/maintenance needs.
While the duties of the position will be primarily focused on church facilities, the Sexton, as a part of the All
Saints’ team, may be asked to respond to emergencies or assist with projects on the Day School campus.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Clean, sanitize, vacuum, sweep, dust, mop, and remove the trash from the church, chapels, restrooms, kitchen, public/common areas, and church office according to daily, weekly, and monthly schedules.
- Provide daily cleaning of outdoor entrance ways leading into the church and office buildings, and columbarium.
- Perform minor tasks involving electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and HVAC; and coordinate with vendors for more complex projects.
- Stock and maintain supplies inventory.
- Maintain Safeguarding God’s People requirements that ensure a safe church environment for all persons, especially children, youth and vulnerable persons.
- Check schedules for room and refreshment setups daily and set up rooms and refreshments a needed for services, meetings, events, and rehearsals.
- Maintains the grounds immediately surrounding the church. Care for the Garden Close will be extremely important.
- Will coordinate with Church Director of Operations and Day School Director of Facilities on campus- wide inspections and safety and security matters.
- Routinely locks and unlocks facilities as needed to provide a safe and secure space.
Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Highly attentive to detail.
- Function as a team player who maintains positive relationships with other staff members.
- Walk/stand for extended periods.
- Lift 25-50 lbs.
- Able to bend over, kneel, squat.
- Able to operate cleaning equipment and machinery (brooms, mops, vacuums, floor scrubbers.
- Able to work on a ladder.
- Able to speak English well enough to communicate effectively with coworkers and parishioners.
- Able to demonstrate skill in at least one of these trades: carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, or landscaping.
- Comfortable with electronic communications such as text messages and email, and general knowledge of basic Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications.
Work Environment
The duties of this position will require the Sexton to be near moving mechanical parts, electricity, solvents, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather, loud noises, etc. Attention to safety and good judgment are paramount.
The work schedule is flexible and will be determined by mutual agreement.
Compensation
DOE, plus health and dental insurance, and contribution to Church Pension Group Lay Pension.
