A member of the President’s Council, this role requires collaboration with students, staff, faculty, administration, alumni, and relevant university committees and groups such that the CDO will:

  • Further the university’s commitment as a Christian learning community by living as an example of the Christian faith in the Wesleyan tradition and exemplifying Christian leadership in the operation of the position.
  • Advise the president and cabinet regarding matters of diversity, anti-racism, and community climate and culture to design, recommend, and guide strategies to improve the work and environment of the university.
  • Frame and articulate a clear and compelling vision of diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice within the commitments of our Wesleyan tradition and PLNU Community Living Covenant.
  • Lead the Diversity Council and collaborate with the Faculty Diversity Committee and other university groups to establish priorities and initiatives that operationalize and update the PLNU Diversity Framework.
  • Ensure the implementation of university-wide diversity strategies to strengthen diversity efforts, address challenges and issues, and promote a respectful, diverse university community.
  • Identify, curate, and organize scholarship and thought leadership on diversity and community climate issues for the university’s consideration and action.
  • Participate in strategic thinking to support diversity and community climate as expressions of the university’s Christian mission.
  • Participate in and lead conversations and training about diversity and community climate within the university and, as appropriate, in relevant organizations related to the university.
  • Work with the senior university administration in evaluating, identifying, and recommending revision to institutional policies, procedures, and practices to advance access and success of students, staff, and faculty related to diversity and community climate consistent with the university’s Christian mission, PLNU Community Living Covenant, and Our Wesleyan Tradition.
  • Promote a diverse community by collaborating with admissions, human resources, academics, student life and formation, and others to recruit and retain students, faculty, and staff from various backgrounds and experiences.
  • Collaborate for excellence in teaching, learning, research, creativity, and scholarship in the curriculum and within co-curricular programming.
  • Regularly review and report on internal and national data and relevant scholarship to inform diversity and community climate efforts.
  • Oversee evaluation and assessment of efforts related to diversity and community belonging using focus groups, other evaluative instruments as appropriate, and the ongoing implementation of PLNU’s climate survey.
  • Ensure implementation of and compliance with the university's applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with the communication team and the President’s Office to assist in diversity and community climate communication.
  • Develop a collaborative and professional team culture by working with university personnel and offices to promote diversity and university climate.
  • Develop and successfully manage a budget.
  • Uphold University mission through work performed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A personal relationship with Jesus Christ, an active Christian commitment, and consistent involvement in a local church.
  • Support the values and mission of PLNU, including the Community Living Covenant.
  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree with preference to a doctoral, terminal degree
  • Direct diversity-related experience
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement plans that significantly increased an organization's cultural sensitivity, diversity, and equity.
  • Ability to model a willingness to learn from groups and individuals different from oneself with a commitment to continual growth in cultural understanding, sensitivity, and actions within the university.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Visionary – able to cast a vision of diversity, equity, respect, and justice that is consistent with PLNU’s Christian mission and community standards
  • Excellent relational, communication, and problem-solving skills - demonstrated ability to relate to all members of the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and administrators), to build bridges, collaborate, resolve conflict, and effectively network with the broader community and external stakeholders of PLNU
  • Experience in developing and conducting training and development opportunities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of spiritual formation principles and their relevance to diversity
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Diversity research and best practices for application and adaptation to work at the university
  • Research skills – Ability to assess the institutional culture and evaluate diversity initiatives with an aim toward continual growth in creating a welcoming and inclusive campus consistent with the university’s Christian mission
  • Ability to provide training and consultation with, or provide resources for, university community members on matters of diversity.
  • Ability to articulate the university’s vision of diversity to internal and external stakeholders
  • understanding of the developmental needs of students and the capacity to partner with others across the university to support students
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, including Title IX of the Civil Rights Act, ADA, and other relevant legislation related to diversity and equity
