POSITION SUMMARY:
The Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for outreach activities in the community to raise awareness about the plight of refugees and immigrants and engage faith-based and other communities and volunteers in the mission and work of the department.

The position may include travel to various legal forums where representation support is required. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Informs clients about requirements related to applying for non-immigrant, immigrant, residency, or citizenship status and give information pertinent to service delivery
  • Answers telephone inquiries pursuant to program procedures
  • Assists clients with completing intake forms, and all other pre-application questionnaires, including the referral for RIS, agency-wide, and external services.
  • Ability to work closely with other employees to ensure a positive, constructive environment within the program or department, and throughout the agency.
  • May provide limited case management for Asylees, Asylum Seekers and other Vulnerable Clients, through ESAVN or similar RIS programs, as assigned based on need.
  • Possess passion and enthusiasm for the Mission and Values of CCDSD
  • Supports RIS Support Manager and RIS Director with RIS special projects and as assigned by RIS Support Manager and RIS Director based on RIS Department need.

OUTREACH/PUBLIC EDUCATION:

  • Responsible for creating a strategic plan for parish outreach and volunteer recruitment and retention (in coordination with Community Services Department), as well as in-kind donations (in coordination with Philanthropy Department).
  • Create and continuously update outreach materials for presentations (slide-show, leaflets…etc.).
  • Coordinate off-site events, including information sessions and workshops.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of outreach events that include but are not limited to digital and written documentation.
  • Coordinate receipt of all in-kind donations to Refugee and Immigrant Services Programs.
  • Participate in and undertake special projects as needed.
  • Take a lead role in planning and implementing the department’s activities associated with outreach campaigns and other special projects, as assigned and/or approved by Department Director.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with faith-based entities especially Catholic parishes under the guidance and approval of Community Services and RIS Department Directors.
  • Participate in neighborhood/ community events such as fairs, festivals, and world refugee day as assigned and/or approved by Department Director.
  • Attend meetings with other service providers, webinars, forums, networks, etc. as assigned and/or approved by Department Director.

VOLUNTEER AND INTERN DEVELOPMENT:

  • Recruit, interview, and assign volunteers to locations based on need, as determined by RIS program managers
  • Conduct and/or arrange for volunteer orientation and training.
  • Confer with volunteers to resolve concerns and promote cooperation and interest in the work.
  • Maintain accurate records and provide timely statistical and activity reports on volunteer participation.
  • Organize and participate in agency and/or department volunteer recognition programs and rewards.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION:

  • Responsible for creating and updating educational material.
  • Assist Director with reports, as needed.

AGENCY ENGAGEMENT/ PROCEDURES:

  • Follow established program protocols
  • Adhere to all agency policies and procedures
  • Submit program reports and statistics in a timely manner
  • Participate in departmental meetings, online webinars and other training opportunities

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Ability to learn quickly and apply accurately details of assigned immigration-related processes, primarily citizenship and naturalization processes
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills
  • Bilingual in English and, either, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Dari, or Pashto.
  • Possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail and high standards of quality
  • Knowledge and familiarity with the culture and community of immigrant/refugee population(s)
  • Ability to use electronic case management database/software with the facility
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Have a cooperative, friendly, and helpful attitude with clients and co-workers. Ability to work closely with other employees to ensure a positive, constructive environment within the program or department, and throughout the agency.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
