The agency responds to the needs of the poor in two counties of the Roman Catholic Diocese San Diego and Imperial.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The driver assists the migrant sheltering program in supporting the transportation needs of individuals and/or the program as a whole. The Driver operates Catholic Charities vehicles to transport clients, food and other commodities between sheltering location(s). Additionally, the Driver will monitor the physical and mechanical condition of vehicles used to help maintain safety and vehicle operating efficiency.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Safely drive vehicle(s) to transport clients to and from various locations, including sheltering sites, clinics, hospitals, airports and/or greyhound stations.
Accompany and guide clients in person at the various drop-off sites to ensure they successfully check-in.
Chaperone clients at the airport, including for check-in as well as through TSA and their departure g ate.
Safely transport food, donations, and supplies to and from the sheltering site, parish sites, vendors, donors and other areas as assigned.
Load, and unload commodities as directed by onsite supervisor at various locations
Communicate knowledgeably, professionally and in line with agency’s mission with staff, volunteers, partners, donors and clients concerning sheltering activities.
Complete all paperwork, records, and schedules, etc. timely and with accuracy
Perform other duties as assigned.
Clean vehicle(s) inside at frequency observed and indicated by vehicle(s) conditions
Perform daily vehicle(s) safety inspections (tires, fluids), refuel vehicle as needed, report mechanical problems to Supervisor.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED
Minimum of 2 years driving experience
Ability to operate a motor vehicle, including and up to 15-passenger vans.
Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
Ability to read a map, follow GPS or instructions while navigating to various locations within San Diego County.
Must exhibit excellent customer service skills while interacting with Catholic Charities staff, volunteers, partners, clients, and donors at all times.
Effective interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
Ability to understand and follow basic instructions and to communicate clearly about job responsibilities.
Knowledge of/familiarity with/sensitivity to the cultural background of migrant populations served by the program
Knowledge of/familiarity with or ability to learn quickly the resources and providers (governmental, civic, social, health, educational, economic, faith-based, etc.) that are available within the community/county to assist migrants
Ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner
Commitment to the mission and values associated with the agency and the program, including social justice, respect for others, early employment.
Ability to contribute to and maintain accurate, complete and confidential records and reports.
Ability in English to read and comprehend simple instructions, labels, and memos.
Ability in English to express verbally what is needed and what has been done.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers up to three digits including basic working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and navigating the internet.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid California Driver’s License
Safe driving record as demonstrated by a DMV report that shows no violations or restrictions
Must successfully complete a DOJ / FBI live scan
Tuberculin Skin Test
CPR/ First Aid Certification (desired)

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and to get in and out of a vehicle. The employee frequently is required to walk; climb stairs; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/ or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and /or move objects that weigh more than 100 pounds using equipment provided.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job the employee, may encounter at food distribution warehouses and sites moving forklifts and pallet jacks. When delivering commodities, the employee will travel throughout San Diego County and will be exposed to the weather, especially the heat of the day and the hazards associated with road travel. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
