Position Summary

Music Day Camp Coordinator I assists Music Coordinator I with program development and daily operation of San Diego Citadel’s Music Day Camp program; oversees assistants and works with children daily in program operations; monitors classroom and outdoor activities; teaches music and theory skills and plays an instrument to assist during instruction.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee subordinates within all phases of program operation as directed.
  • Plan daily schedules and communicate roles and responsibilities to assistant staff.
  • Oversee activities and ensure proper handling of details, including facility set-up and tear-down.
  • Oversee assistants in keeping environment neat, clean, and orderly, including housekeeping duties.
  • Create performance “bridge” from Day Camp to Sunday services.
  • Teach and supervise children in clean-up activities; teach responsibility for keeping classroom equipment and instruments in good order.
  • Work with supervisor to ensure approval of all schedules, details, and budget items.
  • Ensure adequate scheduling and supplies to accommodate all participants.
  • Plan, organize, and implement staff training, including Protecting the Mission (child safety), childhood development and recreation, and musical instruction.
  • Lead children in group activities and music rehearsals.
  • Maintain clear channels of communication with staff, volunteers, and program participants.
  • Provide engaging, fun, and meaningful music camp experience for all campers.
  • Treat each child with dignity and respect; be sensitive and responsive to needs at all times and be concerned for safety and well-being.
  • Ensure Day Camp assistants have supplies necessary to accomplish program objectives.
  • Attend all in-service workshops and staff meetings.
  • Oversee staff and participate in supervising children in Day Camp setting.
  • Travel with children for field trips.
  • Report any potential or harmful situation to Corps Officer immediately.
  • Manage camper inclusion and discipline procedures, completing necessary reporting as required by law and The Salvation Army policy and procedure.
  • Create and maintain office support system that fosters timely and accurate record keeping, including areas of statistical reports related to Day Camp programs, accounting expenditures, and other reporting as required.
  • Provide management report at the conclusion of Day Camp, including but not limited to enrollment by camp; staffing trends; income/expense projections, and strengths and weaknesses.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Must be in good physical health and mental health, capable of meeting program demands.
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Must maintain a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Must successfully complete Decision Driving Safety Test before driving for The Salvation Army and annually recertify as required.
  • Must meet certification by and participation in The Salvation Army’s Fleet Safety Program. (Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy dictates that an employee may not obtain more than two [2] moving violations or accidents within any 12-month period; see The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy).

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to be able to lift up to 10lbs. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinets drawers and reach overhead.  Ability to operate computer, fax, and telephone.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Child Education and/or Music recommended
  • Strong ability to read, write, and communicate well in English
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish helpful
  • Experience planning and executing music camps

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Christians with a demonstrated personal faith, agreement with the teaching of scripture and understanding of Salvation Army doctrine preferred.
  • Meet all health, safety, and criminal/fingerprint clearance regulations.
  • Must be able to conduct a band of 40 students and provide instruction.
  • Demonstrate successful experience in overseeing staff and volunteers.
  • Demonstrate capacity as detail-oriented, self-starter and team player.
  • Demonstrate solid skills in music theory with ability to conduct.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with and relate well to children, parents, and staff in mature and sensitive manner.
  • Demonstrate professional attitude and approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.
  • Ability to effectively handle crisis and emergency situations.
  • Have a philosophy of education and child development which is in sympathy with that of The Salvation Army and Music Day Camp.
  • Ability to adhere to Salvation Army “Protecting the Mission” and confidentiality policies.
