Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Provides musical and vocal leadership for the chancel choir at all services, rehearsals and special programs at which the chancel choir performs, including:

- Sunday worship services (7:30 am to 11:00 am each Sunday)

- Rehearsals on Wednesday nights (6:40 pm to 8:30 pm) and additionally, as scheduled.

- Ash Wednesday

- Maundy Thursday

- Christmas Eve

- Christmas and other concerts

· Provides musical leadership, coaching and encouragement for the individual members of the section.

· Organizes and leads sectional rehearsals, as necessary.

· Performs as a soloist, as requested.

· Supports the mission and vision of San Carlos UMC, the Director of Music and Senior Minister.

· Supports the health and growth of the chancel choir and music program.

· Works in conjunction with other Section Leaders.

· Effectively and regularly communicates with the Director of Music and other staff.

· Maintains a professional demeanor and presentation that befits a staff member of the church.

· Assists Director of Music in advance in finding a replacement Section Leader in the event of an absence.

· At times is required to perform various duties, tasks, and assignments not specifically noted above in accordance with the needs of the church.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience:

Significant experience as a choral and solo singer required; previous experience as a Section Leader or in a similar position desirable; excellent sight reading and musicianship skills; ability to perform various styles and genres of music; ability to smoothly transition between singing as a strong leader and as a member of a blended section as required; possesses good interpersonal and communication skills; displays a positive and friendly attitude.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Must be able to read, write and understand English. Requires the ability to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives. Requires the ability to read and comprehend a variety of informational documentation, procedures and correspondence. Requires the ability to write correspondence with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar. Must be able to communicate effectively using electronic media and in written and verbal forms. Must be able to read, write and arrange music.

REASONING ABILITY: Requires the ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out general written or oral instructions. Must be able to multi-task, prioritize work and pay attention to detail. Requires good analytical and quantitative skills, and the ability interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.

MANUAL DEXTERITY: Must have average levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Must be able to efficiently use a computer.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be physically able to operate computers, copy machines, and other general office equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, use a keyboard, handle books and papers; and reach with hands and arms. Employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. Must be able to move, lift or carry objects or materials up to 25 pounds. Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral visions, distance vision, and color vision for extensive reading and interpretation of reports and documents.

PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Must have the ability to talk (expressing and/or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words) and hear (perceiving sounds of nature by ear).

A personal note from the Music Director: The Celebration Choir at San Carlos United Methodist Church currently consists of about 25 vocalists. Our past repertoire has included Beethoven "Hallelujah" from Christ on The Mount of Olives, selections from Handel's Messiah, selections from Mendelssohn's Paulus,and a wide variety of traditional and contemporary Christian and American music. The choir sings with the 18-25 piece San Carlos Symphony 2-3 times per year. We currently have accomplished alto and bass section leaders, who, in addition to adding their voices to the choir and singing the occasional solo with choir and orchestra, serve as some of my most trusted advisors in the artistic and pedagogical direction of the choir.

Pay: $25.00 per hour
