Position Title: Associate Pastor

The associate pastor will report to the lead pastor and serve alongside them as their chief collaborator and partner to accomplish The Table Church’s mission: to call people to become authentic and thoughtful followers of Jesus.

The Table Church is theologically unique:

  • We believe that Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection reveals what God is truly like.
  • We believe that Scripture, interpreted through the person of Jesus, is authoritative for our lives.
  • We believe that following the way of Jesus is worth inviting others to give their lives to.
  • It’s because of those beliefs that we work to be a place of radical welcome and inclusion. The Gospel is incomplete if it is not explicitly anti-racist; if it does not support leadership by all genders; if it is not affirming of LGBTQ+ people; or does not tirelessly work to do God’s will “on earth as it is on heaven.” We are doubling-down on the person and way of Jesus.

Because of The Table Church’s unique qualities (modern worship, LGBTQ affirmation, urban location) our associate pastor search is focused primarily on Theological Alignment (do we believe similarly?), Character Assessment (can we trust you?), and Cultural Chemistry (will we click?). Of course a high level of occupational competence will be required to “get the job done,” but specific duties and responsibilities will be tailored to the particular person who is offered the position.

Personal Characteristics

The ideal candidate will show a passion for and commitment to The Table’s mission, have a demonstrated history of Jesus-centered inclusive theology, and a strong desire to champion thoughtful and authentic Christianity to help build a diverse, progressing community. They will have the following characteristics:

  • *SPIRITUAL
  • Ever deepening dependance on prayer
  • Keen sensitivity to how the Spirit works and moves
  • Constant desire to deepen their understanding of the Bible
  • Commitment to Jesus-centered discipleship
  • Appreciation for the ancient and modern qualities of the Christian tradition
  • EMOTIONAL
  • Commitment to personal emotional health
  • A commitment to an imitable life—are you living a life that others would want to imitate?
  • Curiosity that drives them beyond easy answers
  • A spirit of authenticity and has a realness about who they are and their life
  • LEADERSHIP
  • Cares as much about “process” as about “product”
  • Prioritization of “sending capacity” over “seating capacity”
  • Openness to risk, creativity; grants themselves and others the permission to fail
  • Collaborative and comfortable delegating
  • Encourages people, loves to help people win, and equips them to try things and learn from their mistakes
  • Orientation towards biblical models of others-oriented, servant leadership
  • Develops leaders of leaders, and equips others to serve in the fullest capacity
  • Confident humility when it comes to their leadership and their spiritual gifts
  • PROFESSIONAL
  • Relatable and approachable, a good listener, and comfortable and committed to ministering to a diverse congregation
  • Capable communicator
  • Not afraid to trust the staff and leadership at The Table

Theological Alignment

  • Agrees with the statements on our belief page: https://thetablechurch.org/beliefs
  • Affirms the Trinity, including the divinity and bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ
  • Committed to the study and exposition of the Bible to reveal truths about God, humanity, and creation we would not otherwise know
  • Is comfortable leading in a church that has been shaped more by Arminian, Wesleyan,

Methodist, Anabaptist, Anglican, and Eastern Orthodox traditions; less by Augustianian,
Reformed, Calvinist, and Baptist traditions.

  • Dedicated to cultivating an anti-racist church that doesn’t steer away from identifying, discussing and challenging issues of race and color and the impact they have on our church, our city, and our people. Dedicated to correcting any inequities we may discover in our church.
  • Committed to cultivating and preserving a culture of inclusion and connectedness, where everybody can participate and lead; where differences like race, color, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, and ability are causes to celebrate, not to exclude.

Essential Characteristics to Do the Job Excellently:

1. On the one hand, you’re allergic to the phrase, “That’s not my job.” A growing church with a lean staff requires being willing to do whatever it takes to care for the church: from pastoral counseling to custodial needs to managing a spreadsheet—it all needs to be done. Possibly by you.

2. On the other hand, you must be able to know your limits and maintain boundaries. Are you able to say No so you can enable your best Yes? Do you not attempt to be all things to all people? Can you disappoint someone when necessary?

3. A devotion to excellence in work, life, and ministry that points towards Jesus, and does not distract due to ostentatiousness or sloppiness.

4. A proven history of preaching the Gospel (in both word and deed); building cultures of discipleship; and serving your neighborhood.

5. The ability to develop and coach leaders so that The Table is able to thrive.
6. Able to help oversee the day-to-day ministry and administration of the church.
7. Able to recognize and enlist apostolic, prophetic, evangelistic, pastoral and teaching ministries as necessary for a healthy and balanced spiritual ministry to the body of believers.

8. Willingness and ability to preach and teach (number of times dependent on skill and willingness)

9. Monitor the heartbeat and metrics of the congregation to assure that people are growing in Jesus and in relationships with one another.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s in biblical studies, theology, or ministry
  • Or 4 years of equivalent training and experience in church ministry leadership
  • Ordination is not required

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salaried Position (exempt status)
  • Full Medical, Dental, and Vision—100% of all premiums covered for employees and their families
  • 3% Matching Retirement Contribution
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off—with appropriate coordination of responsibilities; pastoral staff are not expected to miss more than 5 Sundays per calendar year
