Tyler Perry is bringing some of Christian and gospel music's biggest names to the screen for his upcoming Netflix film, "The Gospel of Christmas," a faith-driven holiday drama starring Fantasia Barrino Taylor and R&B singer Durrell "Tank" Babbs.
Set to premiere Nov. 11, the film features an ensemble of celebrated gospel artists, including CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Shirley Caesar, Jekalyn Carr, Smokie Norful and the legendary Clark Sisters, with Grammy-winning artist Kirk Franklin overseeing the film's music.
Written and directed by Perry, "The Gospel of Christmas" follows Isaac (Babbs), a struggling pastor who inherits his family's church in a troubled New York City neighborhood. Alongside his wife, Rebecca (Barrino), Isaac sets out to restore the struggling congregation while confronting personal doubts, temptation and a sinister adversary driven by greed.
As the church's future hangs in the balance, Isaac must rediscover his faith and the power of prayer to save his family, congregation and community.
The film brings together generations of gospel talent, with Winans, known for songs including "Alabaster Box" and "Goodness of God," joining Adams, whose hits include "Open My Heart," and Hammond, the influential gospel singer behind "No Weapon."
The cast also features Hezekiah Walker, Le'Andria Johnson, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Ann Nesby and Chanté Moore, along with contemporary gospel artist Carr, who recently shared a behind-the-scenes look at the production on Instagram.
The Clark Sisters — Twinkie Clark-Terrell, Karen Clark-Sheard, Dorinda Clark-Cole and Jacky Clark-Chisholm — also take on acting roles. Twinkie portrays Aunt Susan, Karen plays Aunt Lynn, Dorinda plays Aunt Pearl and Jacky plays Bella.
Additional cast members include Ricco Ross, John Gray, Carl Lentz, Mason Douglas, Lauren Chanel and Eric Wiltz.
According to Netflix's Tudum, Perry drew inspiration for the film from gospel songs that have encouraged him throughout his life.
“The vision for The Gospel of Christmas started with me listening to the songs that inspired me, that got me through some really, really rough times,” Perry said. The movie features a soundtrack of contemporary and classic songs spanning gospel, rap, and holiday music, produced by the legendary Kirk Franklin.
“It was really important to me to have some of the most incredible gospel artists there are on the planet be a part of helping me tell the story,” he added. “If you know gospel, you know these people, and if you don’t know gospel, just wait until you see this movie.”
The project marks another faith-centered production from Perry, who in 2024 announced that Tyler Perry Studios and Christian producer DeVon Franklin had partnered with Netflix to produce faith-based films under a multi-year, multi-picture, first-look deal. Last year, the duo released “Ruth and Boaz,” a modern retelling of the Old Testament story on the streaming service.
Over the years, Perry has spoken to The Christian Post about how his faith has shaped his storytelling and sustained him through personal struggles.
In a 2020 interview with CP about his Netflix thriller "A Fall from Grace," the “Madea” creator reflected on the importance of maintaining hope during difficult circumstances and how faith is the source of that hope.
“I just want people to know that no matter how dark, no matter how bad, no matter how dismal the scene or situation you're in, there's still hope,” Perry said at the time. “I say that even from my own life, realizing that I was in some of the darkest times in my life and didn't even know if I was going to make it. But as long as it held my faith and held on to hope and prayer and God and believing, it all came together.”
“In the beginning, I was very much, ‘I'm only going to do certain things, I'm only gonna tell certain stories,’” Perry recounted. “And then I realized as a storyteller, there were so many more ways to tell stories and still reach people. … [I just want to] let people know that no matter how dark it gets, there's always hope.”
