About
Mt Carmel is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church, which is a connectional intercontinental Church. Although we are predominantly African American, our membership includes many ethnicities and is receptive of all people.
Our name speaks of our history, beliefs, and structure –
African: The founders of our Church were called Africans because they originated from the Mother Continent of Africa. Though we are a predominantly Black Church, staying true to our Motto (Humankind our Family) we love all people and welcome them to become part of our Zion.
Methodist: Richard Allen, our Founder and First Consecrated Bishop believed that Africans of that era could be more acquainted with the Gospel of our Lord Jesus, through the Biblical teachings of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Wesley believed that our Salvation is received by the Grace of God – We are saved by Grace through Faith by Jesus Christ alone. We, as Methodists believe that God’s Loving Grace comes through the witness of the Holy Spirit Who is active in our lives daily transforming (sanctifying) us.
Episcopal: Our form of government is Episcopally operated. Spiritual leaders called Bishops lead our Church. The AME Church currently has 20 Episcopal Districts throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
This Episcopal Structure is designed to enhance the mission of the church and to ensure that we operate as smoothly as possible with God in Christ as our eternal Founder. Mt Carmel is part of the Brooklyn – Westchester District of the New York Conference of the First Episcopal District of the AME Church.
