PURPOSE AND SCOPE

Under the direction of the Director of Evangelization and Adult Formation, and in collaboration with the Pastor, plans, develops, implements and evaluates the catechetical programs for families with children preschool through grade 3, for Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW), Young Disciples and sacramental programs as well as disseminates family resource boxes for elementary formation families. Responsible for recruitment, training and evaluation of catechetical teams for CLOW, Young Disciples and Sacrament Preparation and for catechizing children and parents for First Reconciliation, Confirmation/ Eucharist, and Family Initiation. Performs any other position-related tasks as deemed necessary and/or assigned by the Pastor.

GENERAL DUTIES OF THE JOB

In collaboration with the Formation Team, plans a yearly calendar of family-based Christian Formation events.
Work in collaboration with other ministries to ensure efficient use of facilities.
Communicates program facility needs to appropriate staff.
Communicates effectively with the parents of elementary children.
Create and/or updates communications explaining sacramental programs and Children’s Church.
Contributes to digital formation projects.
Oversee and record that all ministers/leaders are in compliance with Safe Environment Training.

Sacraments Duties

In collaboration with the Director of Evangelization and Adult Formation, plans, schedules and leads sacrament overview sessions for those preparing for First Reconciliation, Confirmation/First Eucharist, and Family Initiation.
Reviews, selects and orders appropriate sacramental materials for children and their parents.
Plans, organizes, supervise and evaluates sacrament retreat experiences for Reconciliation and Confirmation/First Eucharist.
Recruits, interviews and trains adult assistants/ministers for sacrament retreats.
Adapts yearly registration process for the sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation/First Eucharist, and Family Initiation.
Selects, previews and purchases all retreat materials and banner kits.
Schedules with the pastor and diocese, times and dates for sacrament celebrations.
Organizes, schedules and supervises rehearsals for sacraments.
In collaboration with the pastor and liturgy department, prepares order of service for and oversees each sacramental liturgy, including Celebration of Confirmation/First Eucharist and multiple Celebrations of First Reconciliation and contributes to the planning of the Easter Vigil.
Requests stipends for visiting presiders for sacramental celebrations as well as writing appreciation notes.
Maintains close contact with the diocese concerning scheduling and planning of Confirmation/First Eucharist celebration as well as attending to the needs of all clergy at the celebration.
Meets with parents individually, as needed, to explain the sacramental process.
Maintains accurate records in accordance with parish and diocesan directives.

Home Study Formation Materials Duties

Reviews and selects materials for all Elementary Formation children.
Assists with the selection, ordering, purchasing and inventorying of books and other family based materials for the four Family Resource Packets.
Recruits and supervises a team for the dissemination of four Family Resource Boxes.
Creates new opportunities for adult learning and participation in the resource materia.l

Mass Programming Duties

Develops and plans “Young Disciples” ministry for the preschool and kindergarten children at the 8:30am and 10:30 am masses.
Researches current trends in early childhood pedagogy and meets with neighboring faith communities to investigate their approach and what developments they’ve taken in the field in order to determine what might work for St. Patrick Catholic Community.
Plans exciting and stimulating Children’s Liturgy of the Word time that includes the Word, music, movement, arts and crafts, storytelling, puppets, skits and other creative, inviting activities.
Creates a nurturing atmosphere where the young child can grow in knowledge, example and experience of God’s love.
Schedules the Sundays and time frame of Children’s Liturgy of the Word and Young Disciples.
Manages registration for these programs.
Plans an orderly and safe method for parents to pick up their child following Young Disciples.
Recruits, interviews and trains a team of adults and teens to work at these programs.
Schedules regular team meetings for the purpose of planning, lesson review and evaluation so each week is sequential in scope.
Assists parents through materials designed to enrich family faith experiences.
Extends regular opportunities for parental evaluation of the experience.
Advertises through the website, bulletin and video at masses.

Miscellaneous Duties

Participates at staff prayer and meetings, events or classes deemed necessary.
Publicizes attendance in continuing formation opportunities for adult ministers.
Educates the community on the importance of the formation process.

Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Degree in theology, education or related field preferred or three to five years’ experience in elementary Christian formation.
Must be able to write and speak in a clear, concise and effective manner.
Complete and maintain Diocesan Safe Environment Class as required by Diocese.
Trained as a Safe Environment Trainer.
Certified as coordinator by the Diocese of Phoenix or working toward this certificate.
Knowledge of all diocesan guidelines and procedures.
Must be able to work nights and most weekends.
Must possess a valid Arizona Driver’s License and own personal transportation. Employee is subject to Diocesan and parish personnel policies prescribed for all personnel.
