First Lutheran Church of San Diego participates in responding to the community's needs through working with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) World Hunger Appeal.
The church's website announced that besides its local outreach ministries, its members are involved in various ways in establishing the Body of Christ.
ELCA: Called to Respond
The ELCA World Hunger section noted that members of the ELCA are appointed to take measures to face the world’s hunger.
The same website noted that the ELCA collaborates with Lutheran churches overseas and other partners. They are working together to help people suffering from hunger. They also emphasized that ELCA World Hunger has a unique role in reaching needy communities.
Moreover, the group also stated that the help of other churches and partners made it possible for them to provide sustainable solutions. They added that the ELCA World Hunger was able to get to the root causes of hunger and poverty.
Some of the initiatives of their partners are providing health clinics and micro-loans, as mentioned on the website. Others also take part in creating water wells and animal husbandry. Besides, the website revealed that some ELCA partners host community meals and campaigns.
Millions of Hungry People
As further revealed on the same website, they noted that 821 million individuals worldwide are suffering from hunger. They explained that the survey means that over one in ten people could not have the food they need for an active and healthy life.
According to the most updated estimate of the World Bank in 2018, there are over 700 million people who live in extreme poverty on less than $1.90 per day. The website stated that ten percent of the world’s population is in the said condition.
Meanwhile, the USDA noted that in 2017, over 40 million people in America were not sure where they could get their next meal. Besides, they stressed that many of these people in America have below $25,000 annual household income.
ELCA: Church for the world
The ELCA website revealed that as a united church, they focused on striving to participate in God’s reconciling work. They noted that they center their mission on weak and displaced individuals in their communities and the world.
Besides, ELCA members noted that they are discovering and exploring their vocations related to God. They indicated that they study and have honest discussions to achieve their goal. As further explained, the ELCA is a witness to the love of God through Jesus Christ.
As mentioned on its website, ELCA conducts dialogues. They also partner with ecumenical groups and other faiths. They want to represent the love of God. People worldwide could feel God’s generosity flowing in their lives through all their initiatives.
ELCA believed that they supported their members as being freed by Christ. They are helping transform service in the community. They have a variety of daily vocations and ministries. They added that they are nurturing and building alliances.
