Concept of Ordination

The Pastor Life website explains that ordination is how ministers of the gospel affirm their calling. They added that it is also the process of training, nurturing beliefs, and developing an individual to become the pastor of a church.

According to the website, they used ordination in the Old Testament to affirm a man to serve God’s calling. They mentioned that it is the validation of God’s will for a fully qualified man to be His servant and work for His people.

In the Old Testament, Moses ordained Aaron and his sons to the priesthood of Israel, as posted on the website. They noted that he symbolized God’s will for Aaron to work as a high priest by the laying of the hands.

As further explained, stretching hands was a symbol of setting aside a man, animal, or object for God's service. They added that it was a symbolic gesture of identification.

Meanwhile, the website exposed that in the New Testament, ordination was used to appoint elders and deacons in the New Testament Churches.

They highlighted that Scripture in Acts 13:3 when Paul at Barnabas was separated for the work God had called them. The early Christians prayed, fasted, and laid hands on them before the two went on a mission.

The website explained that Paul and Barnabas were ordained so they could go on their mission trips to plant new churches.

More Facts about Ordination

The same website revealed that in Philip Schaff’s Book, History of the Christian Church, ordination refers to the capacity and power of managing and governing the community of believers.

In addition, the ordination of pastors during the fourth and fifth centuries is done by the Bishops alone. They explained that at least three Bishops should be present at the ordination service.

More importantly, the website noted that the candidates must prepare themselves for the consecration through fasting and prayer.
