Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Diego welcomes Lent with Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship welcomes the Lent Season with a joyous spirit through Mardi Gras. This event will happen on Mach 1 at Founders Hall from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. 

Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Diego

This coming Tuesday, the church prepares for Lent. As announced on the church webpage, it will welcome Lent on March 1 through Mardi Gras or “Fat Tuesday.” 

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Diego invites its congregation to come to Founders Hall from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. It will gather everyone for a Pancake Supper, an opportunity to have fun and eat all the eggs and fats before Lent. 

According to the church, pancakes dated back to cookbooks in 1439. The church viewed the ingredients for pancakes as the four points of significance for the current year. Eggs symbolize the Creation, Flour is the life of staff, Salt wholesomeness, and Milk is purity. 

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Diego to attend the Mardi Gras, have some pancakes, get some beads, wear a mask, and enjoy the day.

Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday 

According to the History website, Mardi Gras 2022 will fall on Tuesday, March 1. Mardi Gras is a Christian holiday and a well-known cultural phenomenon that dates back thousands of years to pagan spring and fertility rites. 

The website states that it is also popularly known as Carnival or Carnaval. Mardi Gras is celebrated across many countries globally, particularly those with significant Roman Catholic populations. 

Mardi Gras is celebrated on the day before the religious season of Lent starts. As shared on the website, Brazil, Venice, and New Orleans play host to Mardi Gras’ most famous public festivities that attract thousands of tourists and locals.

Moreover, Mardi Gras is traditionally celebrated on “Fat Tuesday.” This Tuesday is the one before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Nonetheless, Mardi Gras has transformed into a week-long celebration in many places. 

"Mardi" is French for Tuesday, and "gras" means “fat.” This one is why Mardi Gras is also called “Fat Tuesday.”

As a tradition, in the days leading to Lent, people would feast on meat, eggs, lard, and cheese that remained in their homes, in “Fat Tuesday.” Preparation for several weeks eating only fish and various kinds of fasting. 

According to New Orleans.Com, Mardi Gras or “Fat Tuesday” is always 47 days before Easter. Its Carnival season starts on January 6, Twelfth Night, the Christian holy day of the Epiphany, and ends with Mardi Gras. 

As stated on the website, “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras is a celebration of life that comes before fasting and simple living during the Christian observance of Lent. Since Easter is variable, this celebration can be any Tuesday between February 3 and March 9. 

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Diego’s location is 1036 Solana Drive, Solana Beach. According to its website, worship service happens on Sundays. Most of the time, its service is at the amphitheater. However, service is at the Founder’s Hall when the weather is terrible.
