Job Summary:
The assistant director for religious diversity, justice, and outreach will oversee programming that honors the diversity of faithand spiritual traditions on campus, the intersection of faith and cultural expression and support the University Ministry (UM) social justice, Solidarity-In-Action, Ignatina Solidarity Network programs, and other activities related to direct service, education, and advocacy for social justice and reconciliation.

This position will develop a robust interfaith program and interface and collaborate with cultural groups on campus on religious and faith observances such as the Guadalupe mass, Simbang Gabi, Holi, etc. This position will collaborate closely with the liturgical program area and with University Ministry staff to create a supportive University community that encourages student learning and development in the Jesuit Catholic tradition; recognizes and celebrates the rich diversity of faith and culture on campus; and provides experiences that challenge students to develop the spiritual, intellectual and other skills needed to fashion a more humane and just world.

The assistant director serves as a university-wide resource on interfaith and community engagement and social justice initiatives for students, faculty, and staff at USF. The position works in collaboration with other assistant and associate directors and reports to the director of University Ministry.

As a member of the larger staff in Student Life, the Assistant Director collaborates and cooperates to create leadership and intercultural competence opportunities to support student learning and development in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. The mission of Student Life is to fully support holistic student development within a social justice framework centered in preparing students to be caring, socially responsible citizens in our global and local community.

Full Job Description:
Specific Responsibilities

1. Oversee, plan and coordinate interfaith programs and activities.

Develop and coordinate a program in interfaith education, prayer and service that aims to expose students to a variety of religious traditions and challenges them to work together for the common good.

Work with the director in developing and overseeing University policies and procedures that support integration and collaboration among religious groups and ministries not affiliated with USF that meet student needs.

Work with the director in the creation and implementation of a clear and comprehensive religious exemption policy.

Serve as a University resource on information relating to religious holidays and places of worship for multiple faiths and traditions.

Develop policies for and coordinate maintenance of the Interfaith Meditation Room.

Create programs that enhance religious literacy on campus.

Work with the appropriate university departments and offices on advancing work in diversity, equity, and inclusion as it relates to religious and spiritual identity.

2. Develop opportunities for the USF community to engage with different faith traditions.

Create and develop an interfaith alternative spring break or immersion experience.

Develop an interfaith week focused on celebrating different faith traditions represented at USF.

Creation of monthly interfaith prayer services.

Oversee the development of informational resources about different religious traditions for inclusion on University Ministry website.

Outreach to faith communities in the Bay Area to create partnerships and develop a comprehensive list of worship sites for students.

3. Develop a multicultural ministry/religious diversity program.

Create a program that honors the specific spiritual needs of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian-Pacific Islander, and other communities of color.

Outreach to student organizations to partner on religious or spiritual programming that meets the needs of the diverse USF community (cultural liturgies, faith sharing groups in different languages, other cultural and faith celebrations, etc.)

Assist in university efforts around MLK Day, Dia de Los Muertos, Simbang Gabi, Holi, Lunar New Year, etc.

Collaborate with the Cultural Centers and DECO on unique programming.

Create workshops and a speaker series focused on the intersectionality of religiosity and spirituality with other identities.

Engage in the ongoing work of anti-racism.

4. Direct the development and coordination of solidarity in action programs for students in the local community that foster social responsibility, volunteerism, and solidarity with populations in need.

Lead community initiatives with partners within and outside USF.

Collaborate with Resident Ministers to develop program evaluation and reflection.

Outreach to community organizations for additional opportunities for students to interact with the community.

5. Ensure an integrated and coordinated strategy for community engagement programs through the UM office that are in concert with the University institutional learning outcomes and UM office goals.

Support the integration of the Universal Apostolic Preferences to local and global programs.

6. Work collaboratively with local Jesuit parishes on social justice efforts. Lead research, development, and implementation of new programs and initiatives in the areas of social justice and advocacy.

Exploring partnerships with community organizations and corporate partnerships.

7. Provide spiritual and pastoral support to the University of San Francisco student community.

Work collaboratively with Student Life and other related departments on campus to promote and support University Ministry goals university-wide.

Occasionally meet with students one-on-one to provide spiritual accompaniment and support.

Participate in ongoing reflection, discernment and professional development to respond as a University Ministry team to the evolving needs, challenges and opportunities in serving college students.

General responsibilities
Supervise and mentor up to 5 resident ministers and/or student staff who may be assigned to the program area.

Participate in and support (as needed) University Ministry signature events and programs such as service opportunities, leadership formation, student groups and/or staff development.

Maintain communication and foster collaboration with USF departments and divisions as well as community partners including St. Ignatius Church, St. Agness Church, the Ignatian Spiritual Life Center, the Archdiocese of San Francisco, the San Francisco Interfaith Council, and others as appropriate.

Oversee the marketing, advertising and promotion of interfaith and religious diversity program area.

Keep and maintain budget records for interfaith and religious diversity program area.

Reserve and coordinate use of USF or off-campus facilities.

Participate in weekly staff meetings and hold regular office hours.

Serve on university committees as assigned by the director.

Engage in professional development through reading, workshops, and research.

Participate on or chair committees, task forces, and special projects as requested by the Assistant Vice President.

Requirements
Master's degree or equivalent experience in religious studies, theology, world religions, education, or related field. Previous successful experiences in planning prayer services or liturgies.

Previous experience in youth or university campus ministry.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Demonstrated competence in spiritual direction, pastoral counseling, faith development, developmental psychology, spirituality, and knowledge of different religious traditions.

Experience and familiarity with Ignatian spirituality, the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, the tradition of Jesuit education preferred, and critical race theory.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an urban, multicultural environment.

Demonstrated ability to supervise and advise individual students and student groups.

Experience conducting training and leadership development workshops.

Experience in budget planning and maintenance.

Experience with producing publications and websites.

Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills are required.

Experience in student orientation at a private institution is preferred.

Commitment to creating relationships across the University to develop collaborative programs and services.
