OVERVIEW:
Harbor House Family Emergency Shelter is a family emergency shelter located in the South of Market District of San Francisco. Harbor House provides case Management, youth engagement services, meals, and resources to homeless families at no cost. Intake to the Shelter is done by referral at intake hubs within the City and County of San Francisco. The Shelter Assistant provides administrative and program support to Harbor House Family Emergency Shelter.

DUTIES:
Perform all duties according to policy and procedure and our philosophy of care.
Report to work as arranged to maintain shift coverage and support of participants.
Set and contribute to a safe, dignified, and orderly atmosphere by enforcing program rules, policies, and procedures, as well as and by the  DHS grievance policy.
Model and facilitate appropriate behavior for participants regarding daily living skills, self-care, personal interaction, social relationships, and constructive time management.
Ensure the safety of participants and staff by limiting facility access to participants, staff, and authorized visitors and service providers.
Respond appropriately to emergencies, including contacting appropriate staff and interacting with police, fire, and medical personnel as needed.
Effectively communicate necessary information to all supervisors, staff, and shifts.
Provide front desk and reception duties professionally and courteously, relay timely and accurate messages to participants and staff and provide information upon request about available services.
Conduct regular rounds of the interior and exterior of the facility and help ensure that health and safety standards are maintained throughout.
Interact with participants to share information, provide supplies, and facilitate interventions as necessary; maintain appropriate professional boundaries with participants and staff; respond to participant requests professionally and courteously; and maintain participant confidentiality.
Bilingual Shelter Assistants provide verbal and written programs and other information to participants who are predominantly monolingual in the language, for which a bilingual premium applies.
Complete and maintain required handwritten and computer-based records, files, correspondence, and statistics in a timely, precise, thorough, accurate, and legible manner. Required documentation may include, but is not limited to, conducting or assisting with intakes and reviewing program agreements and rules, shift log notes, bed rosters, maintenance requests, incident reports, late arrivals, sign-in sheets, shower, and laundry schedules, and other documentation as directed by supervisors.
Perform daily cleaning and kitchen duties as needed, including but not limited to assisting in preparing units for incoming families; cleaning and maintaining kitchen, dining, and community areas as neerequiredoutine upkeep of the facility; and assisting in training and providing participant meals as needed.
Provide varying shift coverage as needed and available.
Complete additional, designated shift-specific and site-specific tasks as directed by supervisors.
Attend and participate in staff meetings and training as required.
Other reasonably related duties as assigned by the Shelter Director and Executive Directors.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
Written and Verbal command of the English language.
Bilingual in Spanish.
Experience working successfully with issues of homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness, and other potential barriers to self-sufficiency.
First Aid and CPR certification (within the first fourteen days of employment – company provided).
Tuberculosis clearance (within the first seven days of employment).
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Modern Office Equipment.
Integrity to handle sensitive information confidentially.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task with follow-through.
Culturally competent and able to work with a highly diverse population.

Desired:
Prior experience with children and families is preferred in an afterschool, ol, classroom, or preschool setting.
Knowledge of co-occurring disorders and trauma-informed environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
Power to lift to 25 lbs.
Ability to operate the telephone.
Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis
