ORGANIZATION SUMMARY:
Catholic Charities is one of the largest, oldest, and most comprehensive nonprofit human services organizations in Northern California, annually reaching more than 60,000 vulnerable individuals of all faiths in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin Counties. With a staff of approximately 450, reaching peaks of nearly 600 with seasonal hires, a budget of $54.3 million, and a current governing board of 27, this venerable, fully-accredited, independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit addresses some of the most pressing community needs – homelessness, generational poverty, immigration, inequality, hunger, aging in isolation, and communicable disease - to name a few – with compassion and services of highest quality.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
The CEO reports to the Board of Directors, and will have a close working relationship with the Archbishop and Archdiocese of San Francisco. Direct reports include the heads of marketing, legal, finance, innovation and technology, philanthropy, programs, and strategic/community partnerships.

CEO RESPONSIBILITIES:
The CEO is responsible for the management and operations of all services provided by Catholic Charities and for implementing all policy decisions of the governing Board. The CEO is the most visible ambassador representing the agency to the community; advocating for vital services for the most vulnerable; building pivotal relationships with key stakeholders; providing effective leadership of all fund development efforts; and promoting close working relationships with the Archdiocese and its parishes.

Specifically, the CEO:

  • Ensures that, in partnership with the governing Board, the Catholic Charities mission and vision are carried out effectively, efficiently, consistently, and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrates the highest level of business acumen, recommends budgets, oversees revenues and expenditures, monitors cash flow, oversees the management and investment of assets, maintains internal controls and financial discipline, monitors risk, and works closely with the Board and its committees to ensure the financial wellbeing of the organization.
  • Anticipates changing community needs with vision and imagination, initiates long-range strategic and operational planning, and is responsible and accountable for implementation of all such plans.
  • Works closely with Board members and development staff to identify, cultivate, and solicit donors and funding partners in support of Catholic Charities programs. Persuasively articulates the necessity of Catholic Charities services to donors and community leaders. Has a history of success in capital campaigns, working with donors, foundations, corporations, and local government officials. Understands planned giving and cultivates the long-term relationships with major donors that inspire capital gifts and gifts to endowment.
  • Develops, presents, implements and reviews programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversees the administrative and fiduciary functions of Catholic Charities by recruiting, training, supervising and delegating duties and responsibilities to a dedicated and able staff with which the CEO functions effectively in a collaborative style.
  • Represents Catholic Charities to local and state government officials, numerous community stakeholders, groups of associations and agencies, and the media. Works closely in partnership with city and county governments in optimizing the extent to which Catholic Charities can deliver services to those most vulnerable.
  • Builds positive partnerships, in close collaboration with the Board, with the Archdiocese and parishes, as well as the elected and appointed political leadership of the region served, and other nonprofit organizations serving the disadvantaged.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will have:

  • Passion for social justice and services to those most vulnerable, including people experiencing homelessness, the newcomer/immigrant and English-as-a-Second-Language community, seniors, struggling families and children, those with HIV/AIDS, among others. Possesses a personal style that inspires others to care deeply about the mission and work of Catholic Charities. Multicultural sensitivity and dedication to inclusiveness and diversity are essential.
  • Familiarity and active personal involvement with, and a strong commitment to Catholic social teachings, embodied in a life of dedicated community service. The ideal leader of Catholic Charities, as a faith-based organization dedicated to modeling Catholic social teachings, Catholic identity, and presence through schools and parishes, will be a practicing member of the Catholic Church.
  • Exceptional ability to increase charitable contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations within and beyond the Catholic community. Superior ability to become a highly visible advocate and community spokesperson for the most vulnerable, for the services required to create an equitable, safe community, with opportunity for all, and for Catholic Charities central role as a provider of those services. Has the presence and strategic sophistication to relate easily to leaders of major corporations. The charisma and energy as the face of Catholic Charities to project the organization to all community stakeholders and to inspire their support of a faith-based organization dedicated to serving all, regardless of faith.
  • Ability to anticipate changing community needs with vision and imagination and, ideally, an understanding of the complex politics and practices of local, state and Federal government and their agencies.
  • Ability to continue long-range strategic and operational planning and be responsible and accountable for the funding and implementation of all such plans. Experience in developing and adapting community-based programs responsive to local needs, with career achievements evidencing business acumen, entrepreneurship, openness to change, ability to take calculated risks, and financial discipline.
  • Commitment to understanding dissenting views, building consensus, analyze options fairly, and ability to be pragmatic and decisive. Demonstrated flexibility, independence of vision, creativity, expertise, perspective, and leadership ability to inform and influence Board members as to desirable options and changes in established goals and objectives. Understanding of the benefits of accreditation and the ongoing process of self-study and organizational development.
  • Ability to work with staff to develop budgets, oversee revenues and expenditures, monitor and anticipate cash flow requirements, maintain internal controls and financial discipline, understand donor preferences and restrictions, asset allocation, payout policy, and the responsibilities of endowment management; to work closely with the staff, Board, and professional advisors to ensure the continued financial wellbeing of the organization.
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships with staff, identify and recruit able new staff, and motivate, mentor, and inspire an effective and diverse professional workforce that models Catholic social teachings. Ability and eagerness to delegate tasks where they will be executed best; ability without reluctance to micromanage deftly and supportively, if only for the short term, where important tasks are at risk of being underperformed. Mature balance between a no-job-too-small attitude and the priority-setting ability of the leader intent on helping staff to do the jobs they should be doing while not being detracted from the job that only the chief executive can do. Ability to communicate and model performance expectations to staff, hold staff accountable, manage conflict immediately and fairly, reward successful performance, and manage underperformance and other sensitive personnel matters deliberately, decisively and with diplomacy, empathy, humility, transparency, and firmness; the ability to create a congenial and productive work environment.
  • Exceptional listening, communication, and collaboration skills; centeredness, maturity, authenticity, high energy and robust good health; servant leader with modest deportment; a healthy sense of humor and a mature perspective on the human condition.
