PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direct supervision of the Dining Room Volunteer Program Supervisor the Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of the Dining Room’s volunteer program. In collaboration with the Dining Room Team, the Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the direct coordination, training and supervision of approximately 40 volunteers in a free dining room serving 1500+ meals daily. The Volunteer Coordinator works with the SAF Volunteer Services team to provide a positive, safe and healthy volunteer experience. They are also responsible for the facilitation the weekly farmers’ market distribution to senior guests within the Tenderloin. The Volunteer Services Coordinator must demonstrate in their performance adherence to established policies and procedures exhibiting the defined characteristics with attendance and punctuality.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

Responsible for the overall coordination and oversight of the Dining Room volunteer program including orientation, training, placement, supervision, scheduling and termination of volunteers and volunteer groups for the Dining Room.

As a member of the Dining Room team, serves as the main volunteer coordinator in the DR one to three days a week and fills in for daily volunteer coordination when staff is absent and/or needed.

Works in collaboration with the Dining Room Staff and our Client Safety Services team to maintain and ensure a safe & welcoming environment for guests and volunteers.

Assists with the development of and oversees the implementation of general volunteer orientation and training information and materials.

Oversees volunteers' work performance, observance of guidelines, and interactions with staff, clients, and other volunteers.

Works with Volunteer services with the implementation of corrective action processes for and/or termination of volunteers when necessary.

Contributes to the upkeep of the volunteer database, and volunteer program systems. Including, checking web sign-ups daily, regularly checking data accuracy, training other staff on how to use the volunteer database, configuring daily volunteer numbers, and posting shifts online as needed.

Maintains timely communication with volunteers as needed including phone calls, emails, correspondence through Salesforce.

Works collaboratively with the Dining Room Volunteer Program Supervisor and Volunteer Services Department on recruitment, retention, recognition, and tracking of volunteers to maintain a high-quality volunteer experience.

Oversees the evaluation of court-referred and student volunteers and completes necessary paperwork to track their service.

Coordinates through weekly meetings with the Volunteer Services to organize volunteer placements at SAF, to provide adequate accommodation of groups.

In collaboration with the Dining Room Volunteer Program Supervisor and Volunteer Services, responsible for the development, establishment, implementation, and evaluation of volunteer service policies and procedure

Prepares statistics and reports as requested; completes and maintains appropriate records and forms accurately and neatly.

Trains and supervises volunteers in the Dining Room (40/day), monitors volunteers' work performance, observance of guidelines, and interactions with staff, clients, and other volunteers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working in social services preferred.

Excellent interpersonal, listening, communication, and conflict de-escalation skills.

Experience and/or familiarity with homeless, low-income, and mentally disabled persons.

Strong supervisorial skills.

Experience working with computers and databases.

Ability to be polite, tactful, and firm with the public. Ability to set limits and handle high-pressure situations with clients and volunteers.

Excellent work habits: punctual, reliable, cooperative, and team oriented.

Ability to work non-traditional hours (weekend and holiday work required). Be able to work flexible hours during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season.
