DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRIES Job Description
I. DUTIES
The Director of Music Ministries is responsible for providing leadership to the music ministries of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. They will, in consultation with the Pastor, select appropriate anthems or special music for the services, arrange for the rehearsal of that music, and create opportunities for members to share their musical talents with the congregation. Selections should be made in advance to allow for practice time for the Church Pianist and musical volunteers. The Director of Music Ministries will lead weekly rehearsals on Thursday evenings. Sunday morning rehearsals are to be concluded not less than 10 minutes prior to the start of the service.
The Director of Music Ministries will also:
1. Provide spiritual care for all members of the worship team and demonstrate the love of God to all who participate in the music of the church.
2. Provide music for introit and anthem each Sunday. May also plan special music for the offertory.
3. Provide music for occasional special events as needed during the church year. In 2021, such services include: Ash Wednesday, February 17, 7:00pm; Maundy Thursday, April 1, 6:30pm; Good Friday, April 2, 7:00pm; Christmas Eve, December 24, 7:00pm.
4. Direct entire music team to set tempo, tone and requirements for quality.
5. Recruit and develop new musical volunteers.
6. Meet regularly with the Pastor to provide good communication in regard to music coordination with sermons and church calendar.
7. Meet with Worship Committee in the fall with prepared budget recommendations for the following year.
8. Select and purchase new music as needed, within approved Session guidelines.
9. Organize and maintain a music library for the Church.
10. Ongoing maintenance (sorting, filing music, keeping attendance records, maintaining equipment).
11. Provide timely information to the church Secretary regarding music for the Church bulletin.
II. QUALIFICATIONS
1. The Director of Music Ministries should have formal musical training, a knowledge of church choral or contemporary music, and experience working with volunteers of varying ages.
2. Ability to read music.
3. Ability to play guitar is desirable.
4. Ability to sing solo or in small groups.
5. The Director of Music Ministries should also understand the basic theology of the church.
6. They must be able to relate to the members of the choir(s), the staff and membership of the church and must also have patience and sensitivity.
III. WORKING AND REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
1. The Director of Music Ministries will be hired by the Personnel Committee, acting in cooperation with the Pastor and the Worship Committee and with the approval of Session.
2. They are directly responsible to the Pastor. Any difficulties in staff relationships, which cannot be satisfactorily resolved in discussion with the Pastor, will be referred to the Worship and Personnel Committees at the request of either party, to help resolve these problems.
IV. VACATION AND LEAVE
The Director of Music Ministries term is a part‑time position. They shall have available to them two weeks of paid vacation every year. Sick leave, bereavement, and other leave is available.
