The Sankofa Event is a celebration – of those who went before me, in blood and in spirit, believing in me, protecting me, teaching me and confirming me. It is my celebration of those who allowed me to “lead them, and guide them along the way,” as they learned to believe in themselves as much as I believed in them. The Event is, perhaps, the most glorious possible moment for all of us to rejoice in the presence of one other – seeing the promises fulfilled; renewing our commitment to teach the strategies of liberation that can only be accomplished by strong faith, hope, and love. And above all else, in gratitude.

The event provides a chance for all to stand in the center of the circle and cry tears of gratitude for all those who perform the construction of this circle. It is a chance for each person in that circle to also move to the center, when called, to dance the dance of their giftedness, so that all can applaud and be nourished and confirmed. “We have come this far by faith; and we will move as far as the horizon, together, rejoicing always that we have been loved and cared for; and to proclaim that we are determined to “do unto others as we have been blessed in receiving.” The Sankofa Event is more than a symposium. It is a gathering. It is a calling together those I have loved for all of my life and through all of my ministries, so that we can be a community –never before assembled – joyously manifesting the miracles that our learning and our persistence can achieve.

It is the performance of Jubilee: to take time away from the obligations of our lives and throw blessings upon each other, freeing each other (and ourselves) to renew our hope, recommit ourselves to persist, no matter the challenges or obstacles; and to show one another all we have learned and accomplished because we have been bonded in faith and love.
